Hadith Lesson: Conditions of a Proper Prayer
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There is Qibla between the East and the West.” Wherever you look, the whole world is Qibla. If you want to pray, you should make intention for Qibla. And when you stand correctly, your prayer is accepted. You must pray towards Qibla normally. When in journey, in a car, or a plane, wherever it is heading, the Qibla is there. But normally when still, anywhere in the world, no matter if you are in the East or West, you must face towards Qibla, and it will be accepted.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you is praying, if he can prevent anyone going in between him and Qibla, he should do so.” If someone is passing in front of him, he should give a sign or raise his hand to show he is praying so that he doesn’t pass.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “RasuluLlah ﷺ does not approve praying behind someone talking or sleeping.” When you stand behind a talking man, you will get confused in your prayer. And it is unclear what a lying man can do. Therefore, it is better to pray not behind them but in front of them.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Do not pray behind someone talking or sleeping.” If two persons are sitting and talking, or if someone is sleeping, do not pray behind them. You will get confused, and it is unclear what they can do. There must be peace during the prayer so that it is the way Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla loves insha’Allah.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Perform your prayer standing.” If a healthy person is going to pray, he must do it by standing. If you are not strong enough, sick or disabled, pray by sitting. If you cannot do that, if you are sick and can’t sit, pray while lying down, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “As long as you are not afraid of drowning, pray by standing on a ship.” Ship were small in old times. If you stood up for praying and a wave came, it could throw you in the sea. Therefore, it is permissible to pray by sitting on a ship. Certainly, if there is a boat or a yacht like nowadays, it may be dangerous. But there is no danger in a large ship; people can pray by standing.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Thawab of praying by sitting is the half of praying by standing.” In terms of Fard, as long as a person can stand and he doesn’t have an excuse, he must stand. But if you pray Sunnah by sitting, you will get half Thawab. If you pray by standing, you will get full Thawab.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Thawab of praying by sitting is half of that of praying by standing.” If you pray four Rakat by sitting, you will get Thawab of two Rakat prayer.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Thawab of a person who prays by sitting is Thawab of a half prayer. However, I am not like you in this matter,” says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. Certainly, his ﷺ prayer is higher and better than the prayers of all the Ummah.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “A prayer of a person by standing is superior over the prayer by sitting. Thawab of the prayer by sitting is half of
the prayer by standing. And Thawab of a prayer by lying down is half of the prayer by sitting.” If someone prays by lying down, its Thawab is even less.
11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Late Nimatullah Hojja used to always say this. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you prays, he should pray like someone who bids farewell, who thinks he will never return to praying.” You should pray as if it is your last prayer. You should pray so well as if you won’t be able to pray anymore, as if you’d die, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.
12-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you stands up for praying, he should not move his body parts and organs.” When you are going to pray, stand properly. Don’t move your arms and legs. Don’t swing your head. We see Shukr to Allah ﷻ, when Imams in Ka’bah and Imams in Madinah pray, they make ten movements. They fix their head, they fix here and there. That is wrong, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. The holy word of our Holy Prophet ﷺ is important for us. There is no rule that if Imam in Ka’bah does that I should do the same. You should follow what our Holy Prophet ﷺ says. “He should not swing to the right and left like the Jews do.” You see that they swing their heads to the sides at the wall. “Don’t do like them, because not moving the organs is what is required for a prayer to be proper.” A prayer performed still without movements is what is required. You must do that.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
