Do Without Expecting in Return
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm:
“Lā Nurīdu Minkum Jazā’an Wa Lā Shukūrāa”, “We wish not from you reward or thanks.” (Qur’ān 76:09). Sadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm. When the things done are done for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ, everything […]
And it is difficult for people, because mankind is ungrateful. If you give, they are with you. If you don’t give, they get angry immediately and talk behind your back. They can make all kinds of Fitnah. In order to be protected from people who do so, do everything and every goodness for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. Not for the benefit of this and that person, not for your own benefit so that they thank you and know you as good. If you do so, mankind will (praise you) for a day but then will forget about that goodness.
Mankind is created upon that nature. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says, “Beware of the evil of a person you did goodness to.” Therefore, when you do it for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ, he may do badness as much as he wants, you will be at ease in your head, your heart and on the inside. You will be pleased. You won’t expect anyone’s gratitude. Gratitude is for Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla.
Certainly, those who don’t thank people don’t make Shukr to Allah ﷻ. Allah ﷻ appointed those people and gave them tasks to help you. If you thank them, you thank Allah ﷻ. If you don’t thank them, you will be deprived of that virtue and Thawab. But it is important for people who give to know that they give purely for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. As it is said in Qur’an ‘Azimu sh-Shan, “We don’t expect any gratitude from you. We don’t expect any benefit.”
“I helped him, but he didn’t help me. I fed him, but he didn’t even give me water.” Many people say so. These are not good things. These are the tricks of shaytan so that you don’t attain Thawab for what you do, or to earn very little Thawab. That thing goes out of sincerity and turns into personal benefit. And its benefit is very little. May Allah ﷻ protect us from the evil of our egos.
May we do everything sincerely and purely for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ for us to be at peace. You won’t think, “Is this person good or bad? What will he think or say?” You will think “Is Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla pleased with me? Even though this person is bad, I did it for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ without expecting any benefit. May Allah ﷻ accept it.” You must think so and do so. Your intention must be like this. May Allah ﷻ give this beauty to all of us so that we are at peace. Otherwise, we will expect something in return. Even expecting gratitude is something in return. We ask from Allah ﷻ, we thank Allah ﷻ, and we make Shukr to Allah ﷻ insha’Allah.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
