Hadith Lesson: Adab of Entering the Mosque
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whoever among you expectorates while in the Masjid, he must be careful for it not to reach the body or clothing of another Mu’min.” In old times, Masjids were not like now. Floors were plain sand. They could spit on the floor when they had to. But our Holy Prophet ﷺ told them to be careful so that it didn’t touch other Mu’mins. It was from Adab of Masjid. Certainly, such things don’t happen now. When there is a need, there are tissue papers. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says to pay attention to cleanliness.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone enters a Masjid,” there is Adab for everything, “he should make Salawat to our Holy Prophet ﷺ and make Dua asking, “O Allah, open the doors of mercy for me.” And when he exits Masjid, he should make Salawat to our Holy Prophet ﷺ and make Du’a asking for generous favors from Allah ﷻ.” Both when entering and exiting, Du’a is accepted, with the permission of Allāh ﷻ. And it is even more beautiful when Salawat is made to our Holy Prophet ﷺ.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you enters Masjid, he should not sit down before praying two Rakat.” That is Tahiyyat ul-masjid, a greeting. It is Sunnah to pray those two Rakat. But when a person enters in the time of prayer, he can perform all of them at once. First of all, Sunnah of ablution, then Tahiyyat ul-masjid, and then the normal prayer with the same intention. He attains separate Thawab for each of them. And he carries out the order of our Holy Prophet ﷺ. But at other times when it is not the time for prayer, he should pray the Sunnah of ablution and Tahiyyat ul-masjid. If he has ablution, he prays two Rakat Tahiyyat ul-masjid. It is a Nafl profit.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you enters the Masjid, he should not sit down before praying two Rakat.” When you enter the Masjid and have to wait for the time of a prayer, if there is still time, you should pray two Rakat first. You may sit down afterwards and make Dhikr, or read Qur’an and wait for the time of praying. Otherwise, as we said, if it is the time for praying, Adhan is called and there is Jama’ah, make intention for two Rak’at Sunnah of ablution, Sunnah of Tahiyyat ul-masjid and the Sunnah of Dhuhr or ‘Asr, whichever prayer is then. You will get the reward for all.
“When someone among you enters his home, he should not sit down before praying two Rakat.” It is the same with entering your home. When you enter your house in the evening, as long as it is not Waqt al-karahah, there is Barakah in praying two Rakat. “Because of the two Rakat prayed at home, Allah ﷻ will bring some goodness for him.” Doors of goodness will open for that man. There will be peace and goodness at home with the permission of Allah ﷻ.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When you find a louse/flea in the Masjid, wrap it in your clothes until you take it out. Do not kill it inside the Masjid.” If there is a louse or anything, take it out so that it doesn’t reproduce in Masjid. It is also better to kill it outside. You may kill it outside rather than throwing it away.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Pray two Rakat before sitting down and give Masjid its due right.” Everything has its right. The right of Masjid is two Rakat prayer. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla put that right to bring benefit to you. It is not an order but advice. Because it is Nafl, who wants may do it and who doesn’t want may not do it. But in order to have benefit and for that right, our Holy Prophet ﷺ advised so.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Undoubtedly, everything has its dump.” A house has its dump, a shop has its dump, a street has its dump, a city has its dump, and a village has its dump. “And the dump of the Masjid are the words such as “Yes, Wallah” and “No, Wallah”.” Swearing for nothing is garbage. It is a useless thing.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Spitting on the floor in Masjid is badness.” As we said, it was sand and soil on the floor of the Masjids. And people of those times had a different culture. They were Bedouins who came from deserts. There were occasions when they even excreted in Masjids. Therefore, spitting was not considered that bad. But our Holy Prophet ﷺ says spitting on the floor is badness. “And burying it is good and has Thawab.” If you see it and cover with soil, you will be written Thawab.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Spitting on the floor in Masjid is a sin. And the Kaffarah (atonement) for it is to bury it.” When our Holy Prophet ﷺ says so, he ﷺ is teaching the highest Adab and the highest humanity. Not only in Arabia […]
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
[…] They were beautiful incense. The incense nowadays looks like anything but incense. There was nice incense in old times like olive leaves etc. They make angels happy, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. It is good to spread it around the Masjids.
11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Undoubtedly, Masjid is not permissible for men who are Junub and for women on their period.” It is not permissible for them to enter Masjid before they purify themselves.
12-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Beware of entering Masjid after eating these two legumes that smell bad. If you have to eat them, make sure to remove their smell by cooking them well with fire.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is talking about products that have strong odor.
13-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Check your shoes near the entrance of Masjid. If there is dirt on them, clean them by rubbing on the ground.” From the perspective of cleanliness, our Holy Prophet ﷺ is giving advice and teaching people in order to keep the mosques clean.
14-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Check your shoes near the doors of Masjid. If there is dirt on them, clean them by rubbing on the ground.” You must pay attention to it and take your shoes inside after cleaning them.
15-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Sweeping the mosques is the dowry of Houris.” Cleaning Masjid brings great benefit and Thawab to people.
16-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “A person who ate garlic and onion should stay away both from us and our Masjid; he should stay at home.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ didn’t eat them. But he ﷺ didn’t forbid them to his ﷺ Ummah. Certainly, for the place of our Holy Prophet ﷺ to be the cleanest and best place in that time, it was advised to the Sahabah not to eat these things. But nowadays, it is permissible for the Ummah.
17-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is a sin to spit in Masjid. And its Kaffarah is to bury the spit, to cover it.”
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
