Hadith Lesson: On Prayer, Adhan and Mu’azzin
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is forbidden to pray in a bath and to greet someone whose private parts have been uncovered for any reason.” You cannot pray in a place where the private parts wouldn’t be covered (toilet/bath) or in a bath. And you cannot greet a naked person.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Pray neither facing the grave nor on the grave.” Graveyard is separate and a place of worship is separate. If it is like here where the grave is separated, there is no problem. But when it is not separated, that’s wrong. Even if there is a curtain in between, that is ok. But facing the grave directly is wrong.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Do not put something between you and the earth when you pray, for this earth is like a compassionate mother to you.” Because a person is from earth, so earth is not dirty. You can pray on earth.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Compete in reciting Adhan. But do not do so to be Imam”, because being Imam is something that has responsibility. There is no responsibility in reciting Adhan. You or another one may recite it. But when you are Imam, there is the responsibility of Jama’ah and your own responsibility. Therefore, it is a heavy thing. Relinquish to be Imam, and offer it to someone else if possible.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Leave some time between the Adhan and Iqamah so that anyone taking ablution does it in peace.” When you make Adhan, don’t make Iqamah straight away. Wait a little, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. Someone taking ablution should do it completely. “And someone eating should finish his food in peace”, he ﷺ says.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the Mu’azzin starts reciting Adhan, Allah ﷻ puts His ﷻ Hand of Mercy on his head.” He ﷻ puts His ﷻ hand on the head of the Mu’azzin. “This situation goes on until he finishes Adhan. The Mu’azzin is granted (forgiveness) as far as his voice reaches.” As far his voice can reach, as much he is granted. “When the Adhan is finished, Allah ‘Azza waJalla says, “My servant said the truth, and he bore witness to the truth”.” He ﷻ says regarding the Mu’azzin, “You bore witness to the truth. I grant you good tidings.” This is the gift of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla to Mu’azzin.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When Adhan is recited in a village, Allah ﷻ guarantees there will be no torment there on that day.” Wherever Adhan is recited in a village or a town, Allah ﷻ doesn’t give torment. However, there are some people who feel disturbed by the Adhan, whereas they don’t know that disasters are kept away for the honor of those Adhans. They are not aware of that.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the Mu’azzin recites the Adhan on Jum’ah, it is Haram to do any work.” This is when the Adhan for Jum’ah is recited, not in the morning. When the Adhan for Jum’ah is recited, or when the Imam goes up for Jum’ah Khutbah, it is Haram to any work, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Especially buying and selling is completely wrong. It is not Halal.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Recite the phrases in the Adhan twice. And recite phrases in Iqamah once.” Shafi’s do so, but our people do differently. Every Madhhab has its rule. Certainly, there is benefit in it.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The Mu’azzins will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.” By the wisdom of Allah ﷻ, in order to differentiate them from other people, Allah ﷻ grants this to them as a favor. They will have longer necks than others for the honor of the Adhan.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
