Hadith Lesson: Invalidators of Prayer
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Laughing invalidates the prayer, but it doesn’t invalidate the ablution.”
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Smiling does not invalidate the prayer. Only laughing out loudly invalidates the prayer.”
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Some people who raise their eyes up in the sky must surely quit it.” You must look down at the place of Sajdah while praying, not up in the sky. “Or else, their eyes will not turn back to them.” That is possible both spiritually, and [physically] they might lose their eyesight, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Pray with your shoes on, and don’t be similar to Jews.” Do it in Khufs, not shoes. Jews didn’t have Khufs.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “I don’t want to greet a person when he is praying.” He ﷺ didn’t greet someone praying so that his prayer is not invalidated. “Only when he greets me, I return his greeting.” Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam always returns the Salat and Salam.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is prohibited to loosen the dress so that it touches the ground, and to cover the mouth while praying.” The mouth must be uncovered without anything covering it. And the dress must not touch the ground.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Some people who set their eyes up in the sky while making Du’a in the prayer must surely quit doing so.” Who raises his head and looks up in the sky while making Du’a, our Holy Prophet ﷺ has
forbidden it. “Or else, their eyes will not turn back to them.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says they may not see again.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When a servant looks aside while praying, his Creator surely says, “Where are you looking, O son of Adam? I am better than whatever you are looking at”.” Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says people must look at the place of Sajdah in Khushu while praying. If they raise their heads and look around, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla makes such an addressing to them saying the best place is the presence of Allah ﷻ and not to look elsewhere.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whoever loosens his dress down out of arrogance while praying, it means he doesn’t believe in what Allah ﷻ made Halal and Haram.” In old times, it was not easy for people to find clothes. So some ignorant people dragged their dresses on the ground out of arrogance. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says if they do so during the prayer, their Iman is insufficient. Their Iman is not perfect.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whoever laughs during the prayer must renew his ablution and repeat the prayer.” When a person laughs out loudly, his ablution is broken, and his prayer is invalidated. He must do them all over again. This refers to all prayers: Fard, Sunnah and Nafl prayers. When you laugh
out loudly, your ablution is broken. But if you laugh a little unknowingly, only your prayer is invalid. You must make intention and pray again.
11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whoever stands up for a prayer and looks around”, Looking around means not only with the eyes but also by turning his head, “Allah ﷻ will reject his prayer.” He ﷻ won’t accept it and tells to keep your prayer to yourself.
12-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “A prayer which does not prevent someone from immorality and badness only takes him further away from Allah ﷻ.” Stay away from badness and immorality when you pray. If the prayer doesn’t bring benefit to you, it takes you away from Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. You don’t get closer to Him ﷻ.
13-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “We are prohibited from talking in the prayer except of reciting Qur’an and making Dhikr.” You can’t talk about worldly things during the prayer. You must recite Fatihah, Qur’an and then Tasbihat. Only those words are allowed. Otherwise, if you talk about worldly things, your prayer will be invalidated.
14-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Sleeping as an ‘Alim is better than praying as an ignorant.” Knowledge is superior over praying. Sleeping of a scholar is superior over the praying of the ignorant, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
15-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is prohibited to pray with the hands placed on the waist.” The hands must be placed as the right on top of the left. And it is wrong to put them on the waist. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam has prohibited that.
16-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is prohibited for men to pray with their hair pulled back.” It is fashionable now; some men put their hair in a bun. That is forbidden. If they tie it back, that’s ok.
When we were little, there were priests who didn’t cut their hair. They would put it in their black hats. We were scared of them. Nowadays, it is a trend to make a bun. That is not good. If they want, they can grow it and tie at the back. But it is not acceptable to make a bun.
17-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is prohibited to pray by holding the urge to urinate or defecate.” It is prohibited to hold it even if you have ablution. People must relieve themselves, make ablution and then pray.
18-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is prohibited for a man to stretch their limbs during the prayer next to foreign women apart from his wife or concubine.” There is Adab in everything in Islam. Therefore, people must guard their Adab when they are around other people.
19-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Do not crack your knuckles during the prayer.” People crack their knuckles. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wasallam tells not to do that when you pray.
20-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “A prayer is not valid for those who look around to the right and to the left and turn their heads.” Their prayer is not valid.
21-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is wrong to have flaws in the prayer and giving Salam.” We must make everything completely. Everyone prays here.
But there are groups outside the four Madhhabs who don’t give Salam in their prayers whatever the wisdom is. They invalidate their prayer and make such a movement (tapping) three times. The prayer is invalid when they do so. They say the prayer is finished then. Actually, the prayer is finished, but it loses its virtue without giving Salam. Skipping Sunnah loses the virtue. Therefore, our Holy Prophet ﷺ tells not to have flaws. When you finish the prayer, give Salam to the right and to the left.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
