Be Beneficent as the Mashāyikh
Eyüp Sultan, Istanbul
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa Raḥmatullāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu Billāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi Rasūlillāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad. Ṭarīqatunā aṣ-Suḥbah wa l-Khayru fi l-Jam‘iyyah.
Madad Ya Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, Madad Ya Ṣaḥābati RasuliLlah, Dastur. Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm:
‘Wa Llāhu yuḥibbu l-muḥsinīn’, ‘And Allah loves the doers of good.’ (Qur’ān 03:134). Allah ﷻ loves those who are beneficent. The benefactors are accepted ones in the presence of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Who are they? People who are beneficent with others are first of all the beloved servants of Allah ‘Azza waJalla. His ﷻ most beloved servants are the Prophets. The beloved servants of Allah ﷻ are those who are beneficent. Beneficent people means those who do all kinds of goodness to people, those who give all kinds of beauty to people. And the greatest benefactor is our Holy Prophet Muhammad ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. He ﷺ is the greatest one. And then comes the Prophets and Ṣaḥābah, Awliya, ‘Ulama and Mashayikh. They are the ones who show and give beneficence, beauty and goodness to people. They love the things that Allah ﷻ loves. Allah ﷻ loves those who do good. So, whatever they have, they give it on the way of Allah ﷻ. They give for Allah ﷻ. Shukr to Allah ﷻ, we are together with them on this way. We are with them and with our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. They show us the same beautiful way. We have lived beautiful days together with them, Shukr to Allah ﷻ.
Certainly, no one in this world can reach the generosity and beneficence of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim. Especially in this time, no one can be a tiny bit like him. He did so much good to people with the love of Allah ﷻ. Certainly, his life was a beautiful life, as he was on the way of Allah ﷻ. Of course, he had a lot of suffering and hardship in terms of Dunya, compared to the troubles people have in this world. But as he was on the way of Allah ﷻ, it didn’t affect him. He didn’t go astray from the way; he didn’t deviate from the way. And he showed beauty to people.
The destiny of people is in the Hand of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Destiny and soul are a secret from the secrets of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. This was the fate of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim. He had come to Istanbul first to study at university. He stopped it without finishing for the way of Allah ﷻ and for the love of Allah ﷻ. He found his Shaykh in Damascus and didn’t live in Cyprus until 1980. He didn’t have a house then. In 1980, the manifestation came to move to Cyprus, so he left Damascus and came to Cyprus where his Maqam is now. There was no one before. It was among the furthest places of Cyprus. There were no jobs, and not more than 2,000 people. Houses you see now weren’t there. Everything was chosen for Mawlana Shaykh Nazim with permission and order. So, he took that house.
Buying the house was with a sign, because that house is very old. It is older than 200 years. A bomb had fallen down on it during the war. And one or two women had died there. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim liked it. But it was not livable. He got it; and its acquisition is a nice story. A man was selling it, and he had set a price. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim said ok for that price. There was a brother then. He offered to make a bargain. The price was a million Turkish Liras back then; one million Turkish Liras according to the Turkish Lira back then. Allah ﷻ knows what’s its equivalent now. The brother went to bargain. It was for 1,000,000, he made it 1,200,000 Turkish Liras. He bargained for 200,000 Turkish Liras more. We used to laugh at this matter. It was the custom of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim to do a reverse bargain. If something was 1, he got it for 1,5. So this dummy brother got 200,000 TL added instead of reducing the price. But they bought it, Shukr to Allah ﷻ.
There is a wisdom here. Everything has a wisdom. The Mashāyikh have left themselves to Allah ﷻ. They relied on Allah ﷻ. They thought whatever happens, there is a wisdom in it. Of course, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim didn’t have that money. He didn’t have it, and the man was asking for it. There was one brother, someone from the old Murids, from the Aghas. They are very generous people. Both himself and his father, all their family were Aghas. Mawlana asked to lend him 1,000,000 TL until money came to him. He said, “Of course!” and gave it to Mawlana. When money came, of course, Mawlana - nowadays, when people lend money, they can bid farewell to that money. No one returns his debt. But as soon as the money came, Mawlana went immediately to return it to this blessed man.
May Allah ﷻ bless him, he passed away last week. He is called Mustafa Haji Ali. He was a holy brave man. Since old times until now, he sent food to the Dergah every week: meat, milk, eggs and chicken. He ran a chicken farm. He sent them promptly. Mawlana presented the money to him. But he said “I didn’t give it to take it back. I gave it for Allah ﷻ.” He didn’t take it. May Allah ﷻ bless him and make paradise his abode. Certainly, he is with Mawlana now. He used to run a chicken farm, and his work was not bad. He bought Mawlana one house. Then, he started working as a contractor. Mashāyikh return the favors. He gave one house to Mawlana and built 10,000 houses, Shukr to Allah ﷻ. The beneficence of the Mashāyikh is as such. This is a nice memory. May Allah ﷻ bless him, he passed away last week. His father was from the oldest Murids - Haji Ali Efendi. He is Mustafa, and his father is Haji Ali. So, his name is Mustafa Haji Ali. His brothers, mother and siblings, all of them are good people.
Beneficence is a great virtue. It is beloved by Allah ﷻ. They are beneficent ones. Certainly, they saw its reward in this world, and they will have great favors in Akhirah. No doubt in that. As we said, since 40-50 years - He gave it even before that. But our Dergah in Lefke has been there since 40 years. His favors have been coming every week. For Derwishes and the household. And they are distributed as well.
Such people are very rare. People give once or twice. The third time, they are done. Masha’Allah, rich people here send some rice, and then they say they won’t give anymore. Don’t give. We don’t take from you. Allah ﷻ is sending to us. If you want to give, keep it. Other people send meat, and then they say “I won’t give.” Don’t give. Who is beneficent finds beneficence. Therefore, the beloved servants of Allah ﷻ are the beneficent servants. Servants who are beneficent are the beloved servants of Allah ﷻ. So, there must be an intention. To the people who are scared that it will decrease, don’t give. What they fear will happen, and it will decrease. But if they give thinking it won’t decrease, it will not decrease with the permission of Allah ﷻ.
These are very important things. People are scared for Dunya: what will happen and what will remain. Allah ﷻ has given. So, give as well so that Allah ﷻ gives you more. What’s important is to be from the beloved people of Allah. ‘ % ’, ‘Wa Llāhu yuḥibbu l-muḥsinīn’, ‘And Allah loves the doers of good.’ (Qur’ān 03:134). Allah ﷻ loves those who do good.
Is our goal in this world to go here and there, to eat and drink? The biggest goal for Muslims is to please Allah., “Ilahi Anta maqsudi wa Ridaka matlubi”, “O, my Lord! You are my objective and Your Pleasure is my request.” - “You are my goal, and Your pleasure is what I ask for.” May Allah ﷻ be pleased, as we attain His ﷻ pleasure, we attain the meaning of life, the meaning of the human life. Many people ask why we came here, why we
live and why we die. Allah ﷻ has given you everything. If you don’t do what He ﷻ wants, whatever you do, there will be no benefit. There will be no value. You won’t have value in this world and no value in Akhirah. Therefore, mankind should use their minds and think why Allah ﷻ created us.
Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says in Qur’an ‘Azimu sh-Shan, ‘ ’, ‘Afaĥasibtum ‘Annamā Khalaqnākum `Abathāan’, ‘Then did you think that We created you uselessly?’ (Qur’ān 23:115). He ﷻ says, “We didn’t create you for nothing, for enjoyment and entertainment.” People are destroying themselves for Dunya and for satisfying themselves. They drink alcohol. They take drugs. They take various things and think if they take them, they attain the meaning of life. Is that possible? No. They know while taking it that it has nothing to do with life, that they lowered themselves below the level of animals.
Animals don’t have mind. When people take that thing, do they still have mind? There is no mind, no understanding, nothing. Animals don’t have minds, but at least they don’t harm others. When mankind lose their minds, that is with their own hands. Crazy people are a different matter. They are poor ones. They can live by. But when people lose their minds on purpose by taking drugs, by drinking and snorting, if they do that to lose their minds, there is nothing worse. Allah ﷻ won’t be pleased with them. Allah ﷻ won’t be pleased with them at all. His ﷻ wrath will descend on them. Because they harm others, they harm themselves and they harm the Ummah.
Now, it is very widespread here. They don’t fear Allah ﷻ. They don’t remember Allah ﷻ. When they don’t remember Allah ﷻ, they certainly don’t fear other things. Who doesn’t fear Allah ﷻ fears everything. He fears everything, but he doesn’t fear Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. If he fears Allah ﷻ, he’ll be good and beautiful. As he doesn’t fear Allah ﷻ, he becomes the worst of the worst. May Allah ﷻ protect us. May Allah ﷻ make us from beautiful, good-mannered people insha’Allah.
As we said, the world is full of bad ones. It is very much full. But there are good ones as well. There are people like diamonds. Be with them. Stay away from the bad ones. Don’t approach the bad ones. If they listen to advice, they will take it. If they don’t take advice, don’t even go close to them. Don’t try. Leave it to Allah ﷻ. Go and find good ones. Be with the good ones. May Allah ﷻ protect us and the Ummah.
This is not only here. It is the same everywhere. Shaytan and his followers have spoilt the Muslim world. They have spoilt it in every way. As our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said, religion will become strange in the end of times. There are many Muslims but they have no benefit. Their multitude has no benefit. It is useless when not with Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. May Allah ﷻ help us and protect us insha’Allah. May we be with the righteous and beneficent ones insha’Allah. May Allah ﷻ help us. May we be victorious insha’Allah.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
