Hadith Lesson: Takbir of Prayer
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “If his heart was in Khushu, there would be no motion in his body parts.” When in Khushu, you are careful and calm in your prayer. You don’t make many movements. When there is no Khushu, all parts of the person move.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There is no one praying who does not have angels to his right and left.” There are two angels on the right and on the left especially while praying. “If a person prays without flaws, the angels take his prayer up to heavens.” That prayer is accepted and raised then. “If he prays incompletely, they hit him in his face with that prayer.”
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Not moving the body parts during the prayer is from the requirements of the perfect prayer.” We must not move our hands and legs or head during the prayer. If you move too much, your prayer will be broken. But if you move a little, there will be no Khushu. Therefore, when you are praying, know that you are in the presence of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. You must stay calm and without movement.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the food is ready,” when the table is set, “and you have the urgency to go to the toilet, you cannot pray.” That prevents you from Khushu in prayer. If you have to eat and you are hungry, you shouldn’t pray. And when you have an urgency to go to the toilet, it is even worse. Praying in Khushu with purity in your heart and to be in your right mind is beneficial for you. The Barakah of the prayer will be upon you with the permission of Allah ﷻ.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When a servant says Allahu Akbar,” when he stands for prayer and makes the first Takbir, “The Thawab of that Takbir fills everything between heaven and earth.” There is so much Thawab in a prayer. This is just its beginning. And Allah ﷻ knows what Thawab is in the rest of it. Prayer is the most precious thing for Muslims. We must not miss it.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the Imam makes Takbir,” when he says Allahu Akbar, “you say Allahu Akbar and make Takbir, too.” You must follow the Imam. “When the Imam goes to Ruku’, you go to Ruku’, too. When the Imam makes Sajdah, you make Sajdah, too. When the Imam raises his head from Ruku’, you raise it, too. When the Imam prays sitting, you all pray sitting, too.” When it is not Sunnah Muakkadah, you can pray sitting. If the Imam prays sitting, you should do the same, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Everything has its beginning. And the beginning of the prayer is the first Takbir. For this respect, do not neglect it.” Everything has a beginning and an end. And the first Takbir is the most important thing in the prayer. You must certainly make it.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Everything has a quintessence. And the quintessence of prayer is the first Takbir - Takbir ul-Iftitah.” The first Takbir is the most important condition of prayer.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The key of prayer is cleanliness.” Without being clean, there is no prayer. “Making Takbir makes Tahrim, prohibited things Haram.” You cannot talk, eat or drink, or laugh after Takbir. You can’t do these after Takbir. It is Tahrim - prohibition in the prayer. “What makes Tahlil - permissible is giving Salam.” Eating, drinking, talking; when do they become permissible? They are permissible after giving Salam and not
prohibited anymore. If you do them during the prayer, either your prayer will be broken, or some other Haram things may happen.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Do not make Takbir for prayer before the Mu’adhin finishes the Adhan.” When you hear Muadhin, make Salatu ssalam, recite Du’a, and then stand up for prayer, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
