Hadith Lesson: Humble Submissiveness in Prayer
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When Iqamah is made for Fard prayer and the dinner is ready, start your dinner first.” When the food is ready, and it is the time for praying, unless it is not an urgent prayer (e.g. Maghrib). Certainly, you must pray Maghrib first. But in other prayers, if the food is ready, start with the food, finish it and then pray. In order for your mind not to be busy with food, our Holy Prophet ﷺ says to eat the food first.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you needs to go to a toilet and Iqamah is made for Fard prayer, he should go first to the toilet” He should not start prayer when he’s in an urgent state. He should make his ablution and then start praying. Even if the prayer has started, it is more essential to go to the toilet first.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is forbidden for people to pray when in urgency keeping their elimination.” It is unclear if the ablution will be valid for praying or not. Therefore, it is better to make ablution when in urgent condition and then start praying.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “One tenth is what remains to a person as Thawab from his prayer.” One tenth of Thawab remains to a person from praying; “or one ninth, one eighth, one seventh, one fifth, one fourth, one third, or the half remains.” As he keeps the pillars of prayer and prays well, he earns more rewards. It can be 100%, 10%, 20%. Some people can pray and earn half of their Thawab.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When you stand for praying, do it like the one who is bidding farewell to this world.” If people are praying, they should do it with such Khushu’ (Humble Submissiveness) as if they are praying for the last time. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam tells to do like that. “Don’t say a word that will make you apologize for it afterwards.” If you will tell something to people and then you will regret it and apologize for it, don’t say it before in order not to feel ashamed afterwards and not to need to apologize later. “Make a decision to lose hope in the worldly things that people possess.” Don’t think that you will have something from what people have of the worldly possessions. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says to lose hope in that and not to lose hope in Allah ﷻ.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “If a servant prays in an open place where others can see him and prays it nicely,” our Holy Prophet ﷺ says if a person prays in front of people and in a nice way, “and if another servant prays in a hidden place where others can’t see him and prays it nicely, Allah Almighty says regarding the person who prays secretly, “This is My servant who carries out his duty right”.” A person who prays in front of people and behind them equally is considered an accepted servant of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When someone among you stands for praying, undoubtedly, he is speaking with his Lord and invoking Him ﷻ. So he must pay attention how he talks.” We are always together with Allah ﷻ, but when a person is praying, he is with his Lord even more. They are face to face, and he is in His ﷻ presence. He must act accordingly, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Undoubtedly, one is occupied in prayer.” Praying is not meaningless, it is an important task.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The first thing that will be lifted from people is Khushu.” What will be removed from Ummah is Khushu’ (Humble Submissiveness), standing in the presence with Khushu. It will be lifted. People won’t have it anymore, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “What will be lifted from the Ummah first of all is Khushu. You won’t even see anyone with Khushu.” Khushu means standing with Adab and full submission. This is Khushu’. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says it will be removed first from the Ummah. Many things have been removed. And Khushu is the first thing that is removed. “You won’t even see anyone with Khushu among them.” It will be so rare almost as nothing. If you see one in a thousand, or one in a million, it doesn’t count.
11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Perform your prayer like that of someone who bids farewell to this world.” Pray as if this is your last prayer. Just like a person prays when he is told he’ll die after that, our Holy Prophet ﷺ says to perform every prayer like that. Because that is the truth. People don’t know if they will reach the next prayer or not. Therefore, pray it like that. “Pray as if you see Allah ﷻ.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says to pray as if you see Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. “Even though you cannot see Him ﷻ, He ﷻ sees you.” Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla sees you. Pray as if you are in His ﷻ presence. And even though you can’t see Him ﷻ, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla sees you. “Lose hope in worldly things people possess,
and you will live rich.” Apart from praying, if you lose hope in worldly matters and things people possess, you will live in richness. When they say “I will do this and that for you”, this is what creates problems for people. Other people have hope. They use that hope and take away even the little in your hands. If you are content and don’t look at them, you will live in richness and you won’t need anyone. “Beware of the things that will make you apologize later.” if you do something bad and regret it, you will go and apologize, beg for forgiveness. Therefore, be careful with your words and actions from the beginning not to be ashamed and need to apologize, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wasallam.
12-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Keep your eyes fixed at the place of Sajdah.”
13-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “If his heart was in Khushu, there would be no movement in all of his body parts.” There was someone praying there and making movements. And our Holy Prophet ﷺ said if his heart was content, all his parts would be fixed and he’d pray correctly.
14-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There is no person who doesn’t have an angel to his right and left while praying.” There are angels on the right and left when you pray. They wait for you to pray. “If a person performs his prayer
completely, angels raise that prayer up to heavens.” If your prayer is correct with ablution and everything, they take it up to heavens. “If he prays incompletely, they hit him with that prayer in his face.” That prayer will not be accepted. They will say to keep it to yourself.
15-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Not moving your organs during the prayer is what is required for the prayer to be complete.” When you stand for praying, don’t move. Beware of unnecessary movements. Sometimes something happens… If you move too much, your prayer may be broken.
16-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Prayer is wrong when food is ready.” Food is superior then. “Praying is wrong when you are urgent with elimination.” That is also so, because there is no Khushu in a prayer when you are urgent. Therefore, people should eat first, or make ablution first and then pray.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
