Martyrdom is Great in Islam
Eyüp Sultan, Istanbul
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa Raḥmatullāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu Billāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi Rasūlillāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad. Ṭarīqatunā aṣ-Suḥbah wa l-Khayru fi l-Jam‘iyyah.
Shukr to Allah ﷻ, we were destined to come here again. We are once again the guests of the blessed Sayyidina Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, the host of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Imitating the Sunnah of our Holy Prophet ﷺ, we made an intention to be a guest of Sayyidina Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī. May Allah ﷻ accept it.
Shukr to Allah ﷻ, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is granting for everything Mu’mins do. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is granting many favors because of the things they do. What are we doing? We are coming here, Shukr to Allah ﷻ. We are given from the favors and having conversation. And people who come are also given from favors. There is no suffering, Shukr to Allah ﷻ. With ou without suffering, everything Mu’mins do brings benefit as long as they believe in Allah ﷻ. As long as they love Allah ﷻ and love our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, everything is a grant from Allah ﷻ. We are not carrying stones on our backs. We are not breaking rocks. Shukr to Allah ﷻ, we are performing worship in these beautiful places. We are gathering for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. And we are getting big favors for that. We are earning and attaining Thawab.
The beautiful holy word of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “I am astonished by the condition of a believer.” If he does goodness, Allah ﷻ favors him. If goodness is done to him, He ﷻ still favors him. If he has troubles, He ﷻ gives ranks and Thawab for those hardships. In any condition, the Mu’min is in profit.
What about unbelievers? Unbelievers should start believing to be in profit too. There is no obstacle for them. We don’t prevent them and say, “Beware of believing and becoming Mu’min.” If the whole world becomes Muslim, how will so much Thawab come? We are not worried about that. Contrarily, we will be happier.
The attribute of Mu’mins is that there is no envy in believers. There is no jealousy. There is no demand in Islam that causes a prevention saying “He did more than me.” There is no such command. Everyone can do; the treasures of Allah ‘Azza waJalla are never-ending. Everyone may do. Even if a thousand fold of people in this world become Muslim, the Thawab and Ni’mah of Allah ﷻ will be enough for everyone. Therefore, this is the trait of a believer.
What is the trait of Kafir? It is envy, because he doesn’t have Iman. He says, “If there are three persons more, there will be so many troubles and so much badness.” Therefore, Kafirs have this mentality: “The more we block the Ni’mah for others, the more profitable we will be.” Mu’mins are not like that. Contrarily, Mu’mins want others to have what they are given. Therefore, this trait of Mu’mins is a trait of beauty and goodness. The trait of Kafir is badness, jealousy and intolerance.
Our egos have a lot from the Kafir’s side. Intolerance to others, not wishing goodness to others, the ego takes from the trait of Kafirs, not from the Mu’mins’. The ego is like this. Therefore, we must train our egos. We must prevent our egos from making obstacle to everything. You must look if your ego is ordering goodness or badness. If it orders badness, you must not obey it. You must train it until it wishes goodness. If you feel envious and jealous when something good happens to others, you will have adopted the attribute of Kafir. But if you wish benefit and goodness to them, you will have taken the trait of a believer.
Some people ask, “How long should it last?” It lasts for life. Live with the trait of a believer for life. A person who lives with the trait of a believer becomes the beloved servant of Allah ﷻ and the beloved servant our Holy Prophet ﷺ. Many people strive to become Awliya’. Being Awliya’ is like this. If you have the attribute of wishing goodness to people, you are Awliya’ of Allah ﷻ. There is nothing like Awliya’ must fly and all. Awliya’, Wali of Allah ﷻ are the people who do goodness and bring benefit to people, who love Mu’mins.
Shukr to Allah ﷻ, we have reached this holy month again. Shukr to Allah ﷻ, a week has passed of Muharram, and today is the 8th day. With the holy month of Muharram starts the new year. The old year is over, and we have entered the new year. The first month of the new year is Muharram. Muharram is a great virtuous month. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam used to fast in this month before Ramadan. But it was not Fard. Whoever wanted could fast; so they would fast in Muharram. And when it became Fard in Ramadan, it was shifted to Ramadan. Nevertheless, it is still virtuous to fast on these days, especially on the 9th and 10th.
‘Ashura is a very virtuous day. Many events took place on that day. Prophets were raised in their ranks. They reached salvation. There are many, many events of Prophets. The sea was divided and Musa ‘alayhi s-salam crossed to another side. Ayyub ‘alayhi s-salam was cured. Ibrahim ‘alayhi s-salam was saved from fire. There are many events. The ark of Nuh ‘alayhi s-salam was saved from the flood and reached the shore on the day of ‘Ashura. There are hundreds and thousands events like these which took place on ‘Ashura. Therefore, it is a holy day.
As we said, for more Thawab on ‘Ashura, fasting should be done on the 9th and 10th, or on the 10th and 11th. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says that the sins of the previous year will be forgiven for those who fast on these days. The sins of the whole year will be forgiven, shukr to Allah ﷻ. There are many things to repent for that people forget with or without knowing. They are forgiven all at once on this day.
It is a holy day, as we said. If people take Ghusl (full ablution), they will be healthy all year. If they apply kohl in their eyes, their eyes won’t hurt all year. And then if they bring provisions home, that year will be full of Barakah. Pay attention to this day and benefit from these things, physically and spiritually. Physically, the things we mentioned are important. And spiritually, you will attain a lot of Thawab and benefits. There is also a four-Rakat prayer on that day. In each Rakah, recite 11 times Ikhlas. There is its Dua after you finish. Recite 70 times HasbunaLlah wa ni’mal wakeel. You should make its Dua and normal Duas; they will be accepted insha’Allah. May Allah ﷻ bless it.
Certainly, it is the day of martyrdom of holy grandson of our Holy Prophet ﷺ, Sayyidina Hussein. That martyrdom is of the highest rank. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says that Sayyidina Hasan and Sayyidina Hussein will be the Masters and Sultans of youngsters in paradise. They are his ﷺ beloved ones. And his ﷺ family goes on from them till today and until Qiyamah. Their story is that there was a Fitnah like shaytan had wanted. And that Fitnah will go on until Mahdi ‘alayhi s-salam. He made Fitnah around people saying “No, this one did this. That one did that.” He turned them into enemies and made the Islamic world fight each other. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ knew about that Fitnah. Therefore, our Holy Prophet ﷺ had warned not to fall into Fitnah.
Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “The best time is my time.” The best time that has happened in this world since ‘Adam ‘alayhi s-salam is the time of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam and his ﷺ Khalifahs, the time of the four Khalifahs who are Sayyidina Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, Uthman and Sayyidina ‘Ali. He ﷺ says that is the best time. That time is thirty years after our Holy
Prophet ﷺ and then the time which comes after that. How long is the time after that? It is hundred years. After those hundred years, another hundred years are the best time, he ﷺ says.
People now are saying those times are bad with or without knowing. They say this had happened and that had happened. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim said not to dispute over those things. It is not your business. It is not your duty to talk about those matters. Those matters took place 1,400 years ago. Why do you act like it concerns you? Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says they are Shahids. What is the suffering of becoming Shahid? The suffering of Shahid is like a prick of a needle. It is the holy word of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. When Sayyidina Hussein became Shahid, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla granted him that. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam met him, and he reached the highest ranks. Since it’s like that, why are you committing a sin? Why are you causing suffering to people and making Fitnah? Why are you being an enemy?
This day is a good day. No one says that the day of becoming Shahid is not good in Islam. Everyone makes Dua to reach the rank of Shahid. Therefore, becoming Shahid is not a bad thing. If a person with Iman becomes Shahid, his matter will be taken to court and judged in the Presence of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla Ahkam ul-Hakimeen and in the presence of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wasallam. What are you judging here? You can’t pass judgment upon the tiniest thing. But you dare do these things. You both commit sin and make others commit sin too. Therefore, these matters are Fitnah. Don’t make Fitnah on the day of ‘Ashura. Don’t slander, don’t take sins through others’ words. May Allah ﷻ protect us.
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says that Islam is unity. Help each other, don’t be enemies. What is the order of Islam? The order of Islam is the things that need to be done. It is justice, first of all. Without justice, you are explaining to people here and you are involving yourself in the biggest oppression made to people. Oppression is slander. Oppression is lying and telling false things as if they were done.
Great Fitnahs are happening. Kafirs and shaytan who is the master of Kafirs are using every chance in order to turn Muslims against each other. When Muslims are against each other, shaytan makes a feast. He gets very happy. The stronger Islam is, the sadder he is. But our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam gets happy then. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla gets happy. But people don’t think about this. They say whatever they hear. They never think about its foundation. No need to go into that anyway.
If you believe in Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla, you must believe in the justice of Allah ﷻ. Are you going to do the justice of Allah ﷻ? The justice of Allah ﷻ will reach its destination even after a thousand years, five thousand years, or ten thousand years. On Judgment day, justice will reach where it should, and everyone will get his right. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says even if a hornless goat is hit by the goat with horns, it will get its right on Judgment day. The hornless goat will hit the one with horns, and justice will take its place. They will turn into earth and be gone then.
Nothing will disappear. There is nowhere to hide. If you repent and ask for forgiveness from Allah ﷻ, you will be in profit. If you took someone’s right, you must pay it back and be saved then. You won’t leave it to Akhirah. If you can’t do it, you should ask for forgiveness from Allah ﷻ. In order for Allah ﷻ to forgive you, you should repent and make Istighfar. If someone whose right is taken away asks for his right, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla will manifest His ﷻ justice according to your heart, if it is sincere or not. He ﷻ will forgive if He ﷻ wants, or punish you if He ﷻ wants. May Allah ﷻ protect us.
Great Fitnah is taking place, especially in this country. It is the capital of Islam here. The head of Islam is here. Therefore, the biggest Fitnah is made here. They say Arabs did this, Kurdish people did that, Circassians did that, Tatars did that. They are turning them into enemies, whereas all of us are brothers. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, ‘ ’, ‘Innama l-mu’minūna ikhwa’, ‘The believers are but brothers.’ (Qur’ān 49:10). We are all servants of Allah ﷻ and the Ummah of our Holy Prophet ﷺ. This is the greatest honor. There is no honor in being Turkish, Arab or Persian. Unless you are Muslim, it has no value at all. The value is in being the servant of Allah ﷻ and from the Ummah of our Holy Prophet ﷺ. The rest is either useful, or useless in this world. When you close your eyes, it is absolutely useless then.
May Allah ﷻ protect us from the evil of people’s Fitnah. Big Fitnahs are happening. We must be careful. May Allah ﷻ protect us. May Allah ﷻ help this country and the Islamic world. May Mahdi ‘alayhi s-salam come in the new year so that the end of this Fitnah comes insha’Allah. It won’t end otherwise. May Allah ﷻ protect us.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
