Hadith Lesson: Etiquettes of Conduct in the Mosque
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Keep your children, insane people, your purchase and sales, your arguments, raising your voice, punishment, execution and unsheathing your swords away from Masjid.” Masjid must be for worship, it must not be used for worldly matters, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. There may be very small children. It is ok for children older than 2-3 years to come with their mothers. But smaller children sometimes shout and prevent people from listening. If crazy people sit still, it is alright. Buying or selling something, arguing and fighting inside the Masjid, raising your voice. Also, there must not be an execution in Masjid, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. Also, it is not allowed to draw swords against each other in the Masjid. Stay away from such things. As Masjids are homes of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla, our Holy Prophet ﷺ advises us to use them for worship, to find peace. “Make the places for ablution close to the door of Masjid.” This is in order to take ablution and enter the mosque. “Scent it with Buhur on Fridays.” There are incenses. It is Sunnah to scent it with incense on Fridays.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There are some actions and characteristics that shouldn’t be done in Masjids. Masjid should not be used as a passage.” It is not nice to pass through the Masjid to the other side. “A weapon should not be drawn inside it.” In old times, there were swords and knives. Nowadays, there are guns and rifles. Showing them in a mosque or drawing them out to threaten is forbidden. “Bows should not be held and shooting arrows is forbidden.” Shooting arrows from a bow is forbidden in the Masjid. “No raw meat is allowed to be taken through [the Masjid]. No punishment or execution are imposed.” Punishment by whipping or other methods cannot be done in a mosque, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. “No one can enforce retaliation.” Even if there is retaliation, it cannot be done in a mosque. It must be done outside. “And it cannot be used as a market.”
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Laughing in the Masjid is darkness in the grave.” It is not good to laugh unnecessarily and loudly. But jokes may be made for familiarity between people.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The goodness and badness of the deeds of my Ummah were shown to me.” The good and bad deeds of the Ummah were shown to our Holy Prophet ﷺ. “I saw that among their goodness is removing the obstacle from the way.” While walking on the road, if you see a stone, a prickle, or boxes and nylon bags which are even worse now, cleaning out
all possible dirt is something liked by our Holy Prophet ﷺ. It is among the beloved things he ﷺ saw. “It was seen that among the bad deeds was the spit uncovered with soil in Masjid.” As we said, in old times, there were no prayer mats, neither stone, nor marble in Masjids. Arabs and bedouins had just become Muslim. They would expectorate wherever they could. Because of the beauty and pureness of our Holy Prophet ﷺ, that is disliked by him ﷺ. People must cover it. But we don’t have it here anyway.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “I was shown Thawab of my Ummah,” Deeds with thawab were shown to our Holy Prophet ﷺ, “up to the piece of litter taken out by a person out of Masjid.” A small piece of paper, a chip of wood, anything possible, even the smallest thing was shown to our Holy Prophet ﷺ. “The sins of my Ummah were shown to me. I did not see a greater sin than a person than learning Ayah or Surah from Qur’an and forgetting it.” May Allah ﷻ forgive us. I always say this. We are sending children to become Hafidh. But what happens afterwards? 95% of them forget what they learnt by heart. That is wrong. Teach them as much as they need throughout life, and don’t go into sin. Some people do it by force, but their children don’t want it. Therefore, what’s important is to make children love these things. Also, if a child becomes a Hafidh and forgets it, that is wrong. If he is a Hafidh, you either track him and follow up with him, or teach as much as you can track. You must sit down with him and listen. Even if once a day, once in two days or once a week, listening to it will bring Thawab to you, and that child will be free from that sin.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Put your shoes not in different places but in one place one above another in the Masjid.” Like a shoe rack. People think what they do now is great. But when our Holy Prophet ﷺ said so, there wasn’t such a thing then. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ was showing every beautiful thing.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whoever goes to the Masjid for some purpose, he goes for the benefit of that purpose.” Whatever intention he has, he will have it with the permission of Allah ﷻ.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whoever takes something displeasing to other people out of the Masjid, Allah ﷻ will build a house for him in paradise.” If someone takes anything bad from litter to crumbs out of the Masjid in order to keep it clean for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ, Allah ﷻ will give him a house in paradise in return for that small thing. May Allah ﷻ grant it to all of us insha’Allah.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
