Hadith Lesson: On the Rewards of the Mu’azzins

8 min read

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.

1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Adhan consists of 19 words, and Iqamah consists of 11 words.” The total of words increases by two when we say “Qad qamati s-salah.” It becomes 11 words.

2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Imam is the person who bears responsibility.” To be Imam is not easy. It has a responsibility starting from ablution, cleanliness and Qira’at (recitation). It is a matter of responsibility. Whoever is going to be Imam takes on this responsibility. “Mu’azzin is trusted.” Mu’azzin must call the Adhan on time and make Iqamah. He must be reliable and recite them on time. Neither before the time, nor after the time is acceptable in some occasions. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is making Dua, “O Allah ﷻ, don’t separate the Imams from the right way, and forgive the Mu’azzins.”

3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Recite the phrases in the Adhan twice. And recite phrases in Iqamah once.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There are three things that had people known their goodness and Barakah, they would certainly draw lots between each other in order to obtain them.” People would draw lots to have them. There is so much goodness in those things that people would compete for them. And instead of fighting, they would draw lots. They are:

  1. “Calling the Adhan in order to pray,” - being a Mu’azzin is an important thing. This is the first thing.

  2. The second is, “Attending the Jum’ah prayer,” - to be present on Jum’ah prayer.

  3. And the third is, “Pray in the first row.” Praying in first row is the most acceptable thing.

Therefore, people would compete if they knew their value. They would even draw lots, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There are three sounds that Allah ﷻ boasts about in front of angels.”

  1. First one is, “The sound of Adhan.” Allah ﷻ boasts in front of angels for the voice of those who call Adhan. They attain the pleasure of Allah ﷻ.

  2. “The sound of Takbir made for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ.”

  3. “And the sound of Talbiyyah made loudly.” To say “Labbayka Allahumma” aloud during Hajj is an accepted thing.

5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There are three persons on the dunes of musk on Judgment day. People before and after them will envy them.” Sometimes there are hills of musk and amber by the wisdom of Allah ﷻ on Judgment day. There will be such favored people on them.

  1. “One of them is the slave who carries out his duty in front of Allah ﷻ and his master.” There are no slaves anymore. But slaves who carried out their duties in front of Allah ﷻ and their masters come in first place even though they were harmed.

  2. “Imam who leads Jama’ah and others are pleased with him.” When he is Imam for Jama’ah, and Jama’ah is pleased with him, they don’t complain about him, he is the second one.

  3. “The third is Mu’azzin who calls the Adhan for five prayers day and night.” They will be on the hills of musk and amber on Judgment day.

6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There are three persons on the hills of musk on Judgment Day. They are neither afraid, nor they feel any fear when people are afraid.” It is impossible for people not to feel afraid of the horror and terror of the day of Judgment. But these people won’t be afraid like others. They have no fear at all, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

  1. “One of them is the one who learns the Qur’an and acts based on it pursuing the pleasure and blessings of Allah ﷻ.” They study the religious knowledge and act upon it.

  2. “The second is the Mu’azzin who makes a call for prayers five times a day during the day and night pursuing the pleasure of Allah ﷻ.” He won’t have fear, and nothing will affect him on the day of Judgment. The horror and difficulty of the situation will not have an impact on him, because he is trustworthy in that.

  3. “And the third is the slave who carries out his duty towards Allah ﷻ and his master right.” When he doesn’t rebel against Allah ﷻ by saying he is a slave but is pleased with the destiny of Allah ﷻ and conforms to it and serves his master. That is the third person. He has to go through slavery in this world, but he earns his Akhirah. He suffers in this world for a short time. What people will go through in Akhirah will be much longer.

7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There are three persons that Allah ﷻ will put under His ﷻ shade on Judgment day when there will be no shade except of His ﷻ.” On Judgment day, there will be no tents, or trees, or anything. There will be special places where Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla sends shade. There are some people among whom are these three persons.

  1. One of them is, “A trustworthy trader.” The first one is not a fraudulent trader, but the trader who sells justly and in a Halal (permissible) way.

  2. “A just leader.” This is also important. It is always difficult to be a just leader. Therefore, that is the second one. The harder the job is, the more Thawab and rewards there are in it.

  3. “And someone who is a Mu’azzin pursuing the pleasure of Allah ﷻ.” That is about Mu’azzins.

8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Two characteristics are suspended on the necks of those who call the adhan for the Muslims, their fasting and their prayer.” You cannot eat anything after the Adhan of Fajr prayer when you fast. If he calls the Maghrib Adhan [on time], you break your fast normally. But if he calls the Maghrib Adhan before its time, people’s fast is broken wrongly then. That is very, very important. Also, it is important for the times of prayers.

9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “I entered paradise,” our Holy Prophet ﷺ had traveled through paradise on ‘Isra wa l-Miraj and on other times. Certainly, our Holy Prophet ﷺ always went there. “I entered paradise and saw the domes of pearls. And the soil was musk. I ﷺ asked Jibril ‘alayhi s-salam, “O Jibril, whose are these?” He replied, “O Muhammad (ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wasallam), these are for the Mu’azzins and Imams of your Ummah”.

10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

People don’t give any importance or value to this. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “If the people were to know what excellence is there in the Adhan and in the first row, and they could not (get these opportunities) except by drawing lots, they would have definitely done that.” It is so important to call the Adhan and to pray in the front row in Jama’ah.

“And if they were to know what excellence lies in rushing to join the prayer in the first takbir (prayer), they would have vied with one another. And if they were to know what excellence lies between ‘Isha and Fajr prayers, they would have definitely come even if crawling (on their knees).” People are able to come to ‘Isha prayer, but they cannot come to Fajr prayer at all. Therefore, even though it is difficult, if they knew its worth, they would come crawling even if they were sick or couldn’t walk, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “If only people knew what is there for them from Thawab when they call the Adhan, they would fight with swords in order to attain its Thawab.” It is that valuable. It is more valuable than jewels, and more valuable than gold. That is why they would fight with each other, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
