Hadith Lesson: On the Adhan and Mu’azzin
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the Adhan is called in a village, Allah ﷻ guarantees that He ﷻ will not give punishment to them on that day.” It is very important to call the Adhan. I don’t know what kind of wisdom it is based on; the Adhan is called everywhere now, but it is called in one mosque. It is not called in other mosques. You only hear a sound from them. Sound is heard out in the air. Therefore, Allahu ﷻ ‘Aa’lam (Allah ﷻ knows best) if their Adhan is accepted and if there is Barakah of Adhan there.
There are hundred thousands of mosques in Turkey, Shukr to Allah ﷻ. They all have Mu’azzins who get paid, who get their salaries. Why are you keeping them then? It is not only to have Adhan, it is to have Barakah in that place and to be protected from the punishment of Allah ﷻ. Therefore, they shouldn’t say their voices are good or bad. If their voices are bad, they should call it at the door. And the rest may call it out in the air. There is no problem. It is still alright.
There are Mu’azzins with beautiful voices. Their voices may come from the microphones from all mosques. But the Mu’azzins of each mosque should call it without a microphone, if their voices are bad. As far as their voices may reach, 15 or 20 meters, they will be rewarded for that. And there will be Barakah in that village or district.
Therefore, we must be careful. They keep asking what we must do if there is an earthquake. The earthquake is the punishment of Allah ﷻ, the wrath of Allah ﷻ. In order to alleviate it, the Adhan is important..
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When Mu’azzin calls the Adhan at Jum’ah, it is Haram to do any kind of work.” Certainly, it is rather for men. What we mean by the Adhan here is the Adhan of Khutbah, because there was only one Adhan in old times. When the Imam goes up to make Khutbah, and Adhan is called, there is 5-10 minutes or half an hour at most. It is not good to buy and sell then. That is not permissible. We must pay attention to this as well.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Recite the phrases in the Adhan twice. And recite phrases in Iqamah once.” Of course, this changes according to Madhhabs.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, shaytan likes neither praying, nor the Adhan. “When the shaytan hears the Adhan being called to perform a prayer, he releases gas and goes so far away until he cannot hear it.” He runs away from there by releasing gas. He goes so far in order not to hear the sound of Adhan. “When Adhan is over, he returns and starts giving Waswasa.” As soon as Adhan is over, he comes back immediately and starts giving Waswasa. “When Iqamah for a prayer is made, he does the same and goes so far until he cannot hear it.” He goes away again when the Iqamah is made. “And when Iqamah is over, he comes back and starts giving Waswasa.” Whenever people are praying, they always have Waswasa. But during the times of the Adhan and Iqamah, shaytan doesn’t like those times at all, he feels odd and runs away.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Mu’azzins are trustworthy in terms of notifying the time of prayers and Sahur for Muslims.” They notify about the prayer, fasting and Sahur times, and they are trustworthy people in that. That is given as a trust to them. Calling the Adhan before certain times and after certain times is wrong, because it is a sensitive matter. If you call Maghrib Adhan before the time of Iftar, the fasting will be broken. If you are late at Sahur time, the fasting will also be broken. It is the same with praying. Some prayers must be performed right on time, like Maghrib prayer. This is important. So they carry a great responsibility.
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When shaytan hears Adhan called for a prayer in Madinah, he goes away till ar-Rawhaa which is 30-40 miles away from Madinah.” He goes so far away from Madinah. 40 miles is over 60 km.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Allah Almighty ‘Azza wa-Jalla gathers Mu’azzins with them having the longest necks among other people on Judgment day because they say: La ilaha illa Allah.” As a favor to them, they will have longer necks compared to other people.
Reported by Ziyad bin Al-Harith As-Suda’i, he said, “I was with the Messenger of Allāh ﷻ, may Allāh’s ﷻ prayers and peace be upon him, on a journey. So he ﷺ ordered me to call the Adhan so I did. Then Bilal wanted to make the Iqamah, so our Holy Prophet ﷺ said,
Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Suda’ (Ziyad bin Al-Harith As-Suda’i) [who conquered Egypt] had called the Adhan, so Iqamah is made by the one who calls Adhan.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying whoever calls the Adhan should make Iqamah as well.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The residents of heavens, angels, hear only the Adhan from the residents of earth.” They don’t hear other things. What they hear is only the sound of Adhan. It reaches their ears as the sound of Adhan from earth.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Undoubtedly, the best servants of Allah ﷻ are those who observe the sun, the moon, stars and shadows for the Dhikr of Allah ﷻ.” The sun, the moon and stars; all of them have signs for the times of prayers and times of worship. Those who look at them for this and benefit from it for the Dhikr of Allah ﷻ are the best servants of Allah ﷻ. Some people nowadays observe the sun and stars for different purposes. The good ones are not them but those who observe this to be on the way of Allah ﷻ.
11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Iqamah is made only by the one who calls the Adhan.” The same Mu’azzin makes the Adhan and Iqamah.
12-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “In whichever community the Adhan for Fajr is called, certainly, they are safe from the punishment of Allah ﷻ until the evening.” People of that district are safe from the punishment of Allah ﷻ.
“In whichever community the Adhan for Maghrib is called, certainly, they are safe from the punishment of Allah ﷻ until the morning.” Also, the Adhan called for Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers keeps people safe until the morning.
There are some unfortunate people who feel disturbed by the Adhan and don’t want a mosque to be built. The disturbed ones - of course, the shaytans are disturbed. So they are deprived from it. May Allah ﷻ not deprive us from this.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
