Don’t Give Your Ego

3 min read

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh, Auzu Billahi Minashaytanir Rajeem. Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem, Wassalatu Wassalamu ala Rasulina Muhammadin Sayyidul Awwalin wal Akhirin, Madad Ya Rasulallah, Madad Ya Sadat As’habi RasuLillah, Madad Ya Mashayikhina, Dastur Mawlana Sheikh Abdullah Faiz Daghestani, Sheikh Nazim al-Haqqani. Madad. Tariqatunas sohba, wal khayru fil jamiyya.

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says,

Don’t expect your life to last in such favors. Sometimes it doesn’t happen like that, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ. As favors don’t always last, get used to living in hardship as well. Life has hard times. Adapt accordingly so that when something happens in the future you don’t feel distressed. A person should not get everything he wants. He should make his ego get used to hardships as well, says our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

People of the present time are completely the opposite. The more favors they’ve got, the more they want. They want more expensive clothes and don’t want to fall short of anything; starting from the poor and ending with the rich. Also when something happens, they panic, “How did it happen? Why is it so?” This is life. It had been so before our Holy Prophet ﷺ said that. This world was not created as a paradise for people. Allah ‘Azza waJalla made easy things and difficult things, good things and bad things. People should adapt themselves accordingly.

It is the same with children. People don’t know how to bring them up now. They learn from others to give freedom to their children, to let them do whatever they want, to give children everything they ask for. And then they grumble, “Why can’t this child do anything? Why does he ask everything from us?” It is because when you give everything a child wants straight away, it is wrong. Even when you give it, you should make him wait so that he knows its value. If you don’t make him wait, he won’t appreciate it. When they grow up, there will not be anyone to serve them and meet their needs. It will be difficult for them. Their life will be full of hardships. Even simple things will be complicated for them.

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says that it is good for people here and hereafter. Even if not Muslim, if people do so, it will be good for them. Sometimes they do it better than Muslims. They don’t give everything easily. And our Muslims have become such people; we want everything to be easy and expect everything to happen immediately. Whereas you shouldn’t give your ego. No matter how much you give to your ego, it is never full. Whatever you do, it won’t be satisfied. You should train it.

Even in Qasida Burdah, there is a line that says, - Ego is like a child. If you stop breastfeeding a child, he will stop it. If you don’t stop, there are children who are breastfed until they are five or six years old. It is an example to control your ego. Don’t give everything your ego asks. Go against your ego in order to be at rest. If you obey your ego, it won’t leave you in peace. May Allah ﷻ give good training to all of us. May we train our egos and educate people insha’Allah.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
