Ḥadīth Lesson: On Accepting What’s Given and Begging
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When you are given anything without your asking for it, (then accept it), eat it and give it in charity.” So do not refuse what is given. Once something comes to you without you having requested or begged for it, it is halal for you; you may eat from it, give from it as charity, or give from it as a gift.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Whatever Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, gives you of this wealth without you asking for it or hoping or it, take it and keep it, or give it in charity, and whatever. He does not give you then do not hope for it or wish for it.” This is a sustenance given by Allāh ﷻ; You have received a gift from somewhere or something else, money or something else - If it comes to your hand without you asking for it, that is, without saying “I’ll take that”, “Use it as you use your wealth,” says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. But do not be tempted by things that are not so; Do not covet someone else’s wealth.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says, “Whoever Allāh ﷻ gives wealth to, without asking for it, should accept it.” There is no need to ask too much “What is it and what is not?”; Since this money has come to you, “Accept it,” says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. “Because this is a sustenance sent to him by Allāh ﷻ.” It is also a provision of Allāh ﷻ; there was a means so that this sustenance came to you. So, there is no need to think much; Don’t say “I won’t take it, I won’t so-and-so.” Take it, use it, give alms; you can do anything with it.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says, “If Allāh ﷻ gives you from the sultan’s wealth without you asking or coveting it, take it, eat it and make it among your wealth.” So you received something from the state; Of course, there is no sultan now, but the state sometimes gives bonuses to people. They also ask: “What are we going to do with it? Should we take it or not?” Since it came without you asking for it, “Take it,” says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Use it as your own, eat it and own it. But when you stand up and say “I want this! Give it to me too, this one took this, this one took that!” That’s another matter; this is wrong. When Allāh ﷻ sends it, take it; But when one gets up and raises a fuss and says, “I want this and that!” That, is of course not acceptable. It won’t be of any benefit anyways.
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says, “This wealth” all kinds of wealth; gold, money, “is attractive and sweet.” Everyone wants from it; it’s attractive and sweet. “Whoever takes it without insisting, it will be of Barakah for him,” so if it’s Halal then it will be of Barakah for him. “And whoever takes it with avarice, it will not be of barakah for him.” So if you act impudently and take that property by force, it will not be of barakah. If it is not of barakah, it is of no use. “He is like one who eats and is not satisfied.” You know, when some people eat and eat but don’t get full, they say, “He eats until he explodes”; This is what a person who covets someone else’s wealth is like. “And the upper hand is better than the lower hand.”
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Hands are of three types: Allah’s Hand is the upper one;” The most superior hand is the Hand of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. “It is the superior hand that gives.” Everything comes from the Hand of Allah ﷻ; In truth, He ﷻ is the Most Superior. After that, you are a means. “The bestower’s hand is the one near it;” so this is the second hand, the hand that gives is the superior hand. “The beggar’s hand is the lower one. So bestow what is surplus, and do not submit yourself to the demand of your ego.” If you have excess wealth, you can give sadaqah; Do not give in to your ego and say, “I will not give,” says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The upper hand is better than the lower hand,” the giving hand is always superior to the receiving hand. “And start with those for whom you are responsible.” If you are going to give something, start with your family, your relatives, and your neighbors; our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “Give to them first; start with them.”
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When a beggar comes to you asking for something, place something in their hand—even if it is merely a scorched animal hoof or a trotter; do not turn them away empty-handed.” People will beg if they choose to—that is their own affair—but the teaching is that if one comes to you, you should not send them away empty-handed. Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim too, would constantly say: “Give them something; do not turn them away empty-handed.” Indeed, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam instructs us to give, even if it is the smallest thing. Sometimes a beggar might like what is offered or they might not—that does not matter; do your best not to turn them away empty-handed, regardless of whether they are pleased with it or not.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When a beggar enters you without permission, do not feed him.” There is etiquette and principles for everything. The brothers should definitely know this. There is adab and principles for everything. If you are going to come, if you are going to enter, you will ask for permission. When permission is not given, you will not raise hell or bang on doors. If they didn’t give permission, they didn’t. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “Do not feed them” about those who enter without permission.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “If you turn away a beggar who asks for something from you by giving an excuse three times and saying that you cannot give him something, and he does not go, there is no harm in scolding him.” So
these situations can also happen. The religion of Islām and the path shown by our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam are very beautiful. The man has no means, he is not available. “I can’t give you,” he says, but the other one insists on him. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “If he does not leave after saying it three times, you can fire him by saying ‘go away’.” So, not everything happens to your order, not as the rude person without adab wants; There is adab and principles for everything.
11-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Give the beggar what he wants, even if he comes on a horse.” So give something; Even if he comes by horse or car, give him something. Whether he likes it or not; it’s his issue.
12-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla does not like a beggar who asks persistently.” Most of the time beggars insist like that; You chase them away, they don’t go away, they stay stuck. Allāh ﷻ does not love them.
13-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
This is also a matter of great importance. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says: “I swear to the truth of three things.” This is a solemn oath taken by our
Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. “No wealth ever diminishes—nor has it ever diminished—due to charity.” Wealth does not decrease because of charity or zakat. This is a noble Ḥadīth and an oath sworn by our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam—As’daku s-Sadikin, the most truthful of all—declares: “You cannot say, ‘My money has decreased because of charity or zakat.’” Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says: “Give charity.” “If a servant forgives a wrong done to him, Allāh ﷻ will certainly increase his honor thereby.” That is, if a person has been wronged yet chooses to forgive, Allāh ﷻ will surely increase his honor and exalt him. “Forgive,” says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, “And Allāh ﷻ will make you honored. If anyone opens the door of begging for himself, Allāh ﷻ will certainly open a door of poverty for him.” A person who resorts to begging will inevitably fall into poverty. Therefore, one must stay away from begging.
14Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “I know that these three things are true…” Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam ensures these as true. “If a person forgives an injustice done to him, Allāh ﷻ will definitely increase his honor for it.” So if he was insulted and treated unfairly, but he forgave; this raises his dignity in the sight of Allāh ﷻ, and Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla increases his dignity among the people. “If a person opens the door to begging with the intention of increasing his wealth,” If he asks for money from someone while he has money so that he can have more, “Allāh ﷻ will definitely increase his poverty for this reason.” So, when he says, “I want to have more money,” he becomes poorer and the money he has is gone. “If a person opens a door for himself to give sadaqah for the sake of Allāh ﷻ, Allāh ﷻ will surely increase his wealth.” Charity increases wealth, gives health, and wards off trouble; all kinds of goodness are in charity.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
