The Essence is Fearing Allāh ﷻ
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al- Ḥaqqānī. Madad. Ṭarīqatunā aṣ-Suḥbah wa l-Khayru fi l-Jam‘iyyah.
Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said, “I am the city of knowledge,” and declared regarding Sayyidinā Ali, “And Ali is its gate.” This means that all forms of knowledge resided in Sayyidinā Ali. And he summarized all knowledge in just a few words:
“Ra’su l-Ḥikmah Makhāfatu-Llah”, “The head of wisdom is fear of Allāh ﷻ.” The head of all knowledge, goodness, and counsel is the fear of Allāh ﷻ. When there is no fear of Allāh ﷻ, anything can happen; such is the state of the world. Let alone fearing Allāh ﷻ, they do not even believe in Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. That is the root cause of it all; the reason for such chaos, such evil, such oppression, and every manner of wrongdoing is the lack of fear of Allāh ﷻ. A person who fears Allāh ﷻ does not commit evil. A man who fears Allāh ﷻ does not oppress others. A man who fears Allāh ﷻ does not steal. A man who fears Allāh ﷻ does not drink alcohol, does not commit adultery, and abstains from all kinds of evil deeds.
Now, as we said, these people have lost their belief in Allāh ﷻ—let alone fearing Him ﷻ. Yet, after failing to fear Him ﷻ, they ask, “Why is our situation like this?” It is the truth. Sayyidinā Ali spoke these beautiful words fifteen hundred years ago. Without the fear of Allāh ﷻ, no act of worship or obedience... Just the other day, one of our brothers asked, “How does one become ‘awliyā’?” It seems some people are actually holding courses in certain places titled “How to Make Saints.” A wali is a friend of Allāh ﷻ; if you fear Allāh ﷻ, Allāh ﷻ will love you. Awliyā’ —a waliyyuLlah—is a beloved servant of Allāh ﷻ. It is not a matter of performing karāmah; a wali is a person whom Allāh ﷻ loves, and who fears and feels a sense of reverent shame before Him ﷻ. To fear Allāh ﷻ means to feel this reverent shame—to think, “Let me not fall into such a disgraceful state in His ﷻ presence.” That is the essence of the matter. After all, Allāh ﷻ is The All-Forgiving. What we call “fearing Allāh ﷻ” is essentially this sense of reverent shame. It is the oppressors who truly ought to fear; let them be afraid. Let those who commit evil fear Allāh ﷻ. Yet, the door to forgiveness and pardon remains open. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla is
Merciful. No matter how much evil a person has committed, still, He ﷻ forgives the one who repents.
Therefore, one must fear Allāh ﷻ and turn to Him ﷻ so that things may go well. Nothing else will avail; you cannot achieve anything simply by saying, “We shall do this, we shall do that.” Without the fear of Allāh ﷻ, nothing comes to fruition. May Allāh ﷻ help mankind. May Allāh ﷻ grant guidance to us all.
Wa min Allāhi t-Tawfīq. Al-Fātiḥa.
