Ḥadīth Lesson: On Zakāt and Sadaqah
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.
1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Allāh ﷻ had forbidden sadaqah to me ﷺ and my household, my Ahlul Bayt.” Our Prophet ﷺ did not accept charity; it was not ḥalāl. He ﷺ would accept gifts, but not charity.
2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Indeed, Zakah ought not to be given to the family of Muhammad ﷺ, it will be like giving them from the impurities of people.” The Prophet’s ﷺ family (Ahlul Bayt) don’t take zakat and sadaqah; only a gift.
3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “O Abu Rafi, The Sadaqah is not permissible for us, and the freed slave of a people is one of them.” Of course, at that time, the Prophet’s ﷺ family was there with him ﷺ, and it was not permissible for those with him ﷺ either.
4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam
The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “It is not permissible for us, the Family of Muhammad ﷺ, to receive sadaqah.”
5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Leave it, leave it, throw it; don’t you know that we do not eat the sadaqa?” He ﷺ probably told his family, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said, “Don’t take this, throw it away, we don’t eat sadaqah.”
6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Fear Allāh ﷻ, O Abu L-Walid! Is that Zakat? Whoever takes something from the resources of the Zakat (unlawfully) will be carrying it on his neck on the Day of Resurrection; if it be a camel, it will be grunting; if a cow, it will be mooing; and if a sheep, it will be bleating.” So, for those who collect Zakat, or those who hoard it: don’t come on the Day of Judgment with what you left behind hanging around their necks like camels bellowing or cows bellowing. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam warned us to be mindful of them.
7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Keep your Zakah collectors happy.” So, the zakat collector also has a right to zakat. But it’s a portion, not a very large amount. He has a right to zakat, and the order is to keep him happy.
8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Men will unjustly acquire for themselves property which belongs to God,” Some of those who are entrusted with it, misuse it for their own benefit, for their own gain. “And on the day of resurrection they will go to hell.” So those who do not give what is due to them, whether it be zakat, charity, or anything else given for the sake of Allāh ﷻ, will also face fire on the Day of Judgment. May Allāh ﷻ protect us.
9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Allāh ﷻ is not pleased with a Prophet’s or anyone else’s decision about sadaqah till He ﷻ has given a decision about them Himself ﷻ.” So, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla did not even approve of the prophets dividing it up. “He ﷻ has divided those entitled to them into eight categories.” So that no one would say the Prophet acted unjustly, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has divided the Zakat into eight parts. It is clearly stated there who is eligible to receive Zakat.
10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “The faithful Muslim storekeeper,” When a Muslim is a treasurer, he becomes trustworthy. “Who gives what he is commanded completely and in full with a good will, and delivers it to the one to whom he was told to give it, is one of the two* who give sadaqah.” So when a Muslim delivers the charity entrusted to him, he earns as much reward as if he had given charity to someone else.
Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
