Certainly, there are many diseases of the ego. One of them is to be praised. The more people praise their ego, the happier their ego is. It gets happier when they pamper it. The ego likes it very much; whereas our ancestors said if someone disparages you, you should not get upset, and if someone praises you, you should not get happy. Both of them must be same.

Who gets happy for being praised and upset for being disparaged inflates his ego. He won’t be able to control his ego then. Everything must the be same. Everyone must guard his ego and not listen to others’ words. They must not show much importance and spoil it. Because if you inflate your ego, you can’t capture it. You must always reduce it. Treat it with humility and say your ego does not deserve to be praised. If something seems difficult to your ego, you must say “This is just a little. What they say is correct. My ego is worse than that.” People on the way of Tariqah must do it more not to be defeated by their egos. Otherwise, if you inflate your ego, you can’t defeat it. If you reduce it, you will defeat it. May Allah ﷻ help us.

Sometimes many people use your ego to cheat you or get something from you with words, with various ways. Everyone knows it. If you pamper someone and say “You are so and so”, he will get embarrassed and give it. But why does he give? Because you praise his ego. You take what you want easier then. Otherwise, you can’t take it. You can’t take anything from someone who controls his ego with the permission of Allah ﷻ. May Allah ﷻ protect all of us from the evil of our egos. May He ﷻ let us overcome our egos insha’Allah.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
