Hadith Lesson: Al-Fatiha and Amin

7 min read

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad.

1Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the Imam finishes Surah l-Fatihah and says ‘Amin, you say ‘Amin too. Because when a person says ‘Amin and it coincides with angels saying ‘Amin, his past small sins will be forgiven.” ‘Amin is said after Fatihah, after the Imam. In Hanafi, they say it quietly. In Shafi, they say it aloud. Angels say ‘Amin too. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says if they coincide with each other, the small sins are forgiven.

2Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, “I divided the prayer into two between Myself and My servant. My servant is given what he asks for”.” The value of prayer is very great. “Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, “When My servant says AlhamduliLlahi Rabbi l-‘Alameen - praises be to Allah ﷻ, the Lord of universes; this is the translation of AlhamduliLlahi Rabbi l-‘Alameen. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says “My servant praises Me. When My servant says ar-Rahmani r-Rahim, he praises Me.” Saying ar-Rahmani rRahim to Allah ﷻ is a big praise. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is pleased with it. “When My servant says AlhamduliLlahi Rabbi l-‘Alameen, Maliki yawmu d-deen, he exalts Me. When My servant says, “We worship only You, we ask for help only from You. “Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’een”, this is between Me and My servant. I give whatever My servant asks for. When My servant says, “Put us on the right way where we are given blessing. Don’t make us from those who fall victim to the wrath and go astray,” Allah ﷻ says, “This is for My servant. Whatever he asks for will be given to him”.”

People don’t realize how high and important prayer is. Every time you stand up for a prayer, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla addresses you and gives you these beautiful things of inestimable value. This is just about Surah al-Fatihah in the prayer. The rest have no limit of Thawab and virtues. But people are running after useless things and value them. Who values worthless things - If they valued earth, that’d be fine. But people value dirt. They leave jewels and live thinking they are clever.

3Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “I was given three traits. One is to pray in rows in Jama’ah.” There had not been such a thing before. Of course, the religion was Islam for all Prophets. But there was no permission to do this. Praying in rows was given especially to our Holy Prophet ﷺ in the presence of Allah ﷻ. “One is greeting each other which is done as a mutual sign of respect between the people of paradise.” Saying As-salamu ‘alaykum is the greeting of the people of paradise. It wasn’t there before. “Another one is the word ‘Amin. This word was not given to anyone before you. Allah ﷻ gave

this word only to Harun. When Musa prayed, Harun would say ‘Amin after his Dua.” It was not given to others but to our Holy Prophet ﷺ. And Harun ‘alayhi s-salam used to say ‘Amin for the Dua of his brother Musa ‘alayhi s-salam.

4Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “When the Ayah of “Ghayril-maghdubi alayhim wa la d-dalin” is recited in the prayer, say ‘Amin.” When the Imam finishes Al-Fatihah in the prayer, we say ‘Amin. This is done Shukr to Allah ﷻ.

5Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “A prayer performed without Umm ulKitab in it is incomplete.” Umm ul-Kitab means Surat Al-Fatihah. Umm ulKitab in Arabic means the mother of the book. Al-Fatihah is very important that it is the mother of the Qur’an. A prayer cannot be made without Al-Fatihah. It is not accepted.

6Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Jews have not envied anything the way they envy three things in us.” Jews knew and saw how our Holy Prophet ﷺ prayed. They knew he ﷺ was the true Prophet. But they didn’t believe out of their envy and stayed in their religion. And they envied these three things very much. “One of them is giving salam. Another one is saying ‘Amin after Surah alFatihah. This is the second thing. And when he ﷺ said Allahumma Rabbana wa Laka l-Hamd while raising from Ruk’u after Sami’a Allahu li-man Hamidah, they envied a lot.”

7Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Jews have not envied anything the way they envy how you give s-salam, say ‘Amin after Surah al-Fatihah and praise Allah ﷻ.” They envy these things so much. If they became Muslim, they would attain it too. But they didn’t accept it out of envy. Because they want the last Prophet to be from them, whereas they know that Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla said in the holy books the last one will come as the best of people from Makkah and Madinah, with an Arabic tongue. Yet, most of them didn’t accept it out of envy.

8Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “Jews have not envied anything the way they envy you saying ‘Amin after Al-Fatihah and praising. Say a lot of ‘Amin for this reason.” Our Holy Prophet ﷺ says to say ‘Amin in prayer and outside of it. Now they also say ‘Amin out of envy. But they acquired it afterwards. Otherwise, they didn’t have it. Christians also say Amen in churches.

9Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “A person praying behind Imam should recite Umm ul-Kitab, Surat Al-Fatihah.”

10-Qala RasuluLlah salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ (peace be upon him ﷺ) says:

Our Holy Prophet ﷺ is saying, “There is no prayer for the person who doesn’t recite Surat al-Fatihah.” Certainly, we don’t recite it behind the Imam in Hanafi Madhhab. In other Madhhabs, some have it, and in some, when Imam recites it, it covers everyone.

Sadaqa RasuluLlah fi ma qal, aw kama qal. The Messenger of Allāh ﷻ says the truth in what he ﷺ said or as he ﷺ said.
