A‘ūdhu bi-Llāhi mina sh-shayṭāni r-rajīm. Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm:
(Qur’ān 10:62-63). Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, ‘Alā inna Awliyā’ Llahi lā kḥawfun ‘alayhim wa lā hum yaḥzanūn 62 ‘Alladhīna āmanū wakānū yattaqūn 63 ’, ‘Verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve 62 Those who believed and have been pious 63.’
Allāh ﷻ says in the Qur’an, the beloved ones of Allāh ﷻ have no fear and no sadness. Today is a nice day because we celebrate Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim’s birthday. It is a blessed day for all of us. We mustn’t forget what he gave us. He gave us the most precious thing. Mawlānā Shaykh gave the most precious thing for human beings, but people do not appreciate it. The precious thing is forever. Someone gives you money or food or anything, it is only for a short time. Mawlānā gave us Iman, belief. This lasts forever. It is forever.
Hundreds of thousands, millions of people are still taking from his Barakah everywhere in the world. We hear from many people that they are still benefiting from Mawlānā’s teachings, videos and ṣuḥbahs. Many people experience karāmah, miracle, or hear someone say about a miracle and tell us about it. We hear about many miracles and also see many miracles of Mawlānā but people still tell us: every time we hear a new one. Mawlānā is a rare one, awliyā’. Not in every time comes like Mawlānā. In a hundred years, only one comes like Mawlānā.
Awliyā’u Llāh knew about him. Shaykh Sharafuddin ad-Dāghestānī was telling Mawlānā Shaykh Abdu Llāh about the day of the birth of Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim, more than 100 years ago [from today]. He said, “Today one of our sons is coming to this dunyā. He is special.” He described him; he even gave the number of his shoe size. He said, “Through this son of ours, he will open the west and make western people enter Islām.” Because before, there wasn’t like him. Hundred thousands of people came to Islām; especially in the West. There were also many people becoming Muslim from the Far East, Middle East and other places. But mostly in Europe, America, Canada; many people, through him, came to Islām. Mawlānā’s way, the Naqshbandī ṭarīqah, from our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam until him, this way is true. It is for teaching people reality. Tarīqah makes people enter Islām by themselves, without force.
Before Islām, many enemies of Islām were attacking. In old times, there was a group who didn’t want Islām. They follow the order of shaytan. In old times, from the beginning - not from the time of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, but from the time of Adam ‘alayhi ssalam. They are trying to take off the good way, to destroy humans. In the time of Muslims, there were many Fitnahs coming to Islām. But through ṭarīqah, especially Naqshbandīyyah, they removed it [Fitnah].
Especially, there was one near Central Asia, in Kazakhstan and all this area. They were ruled by Sultan. But this Sultan was cheated by Fitnah people, and they became against Ahlu sSunnah wal Jama’ah. It was very strong. One of our Shaykhs in the Silsila (chain), Yūsuf alHamadānī gave a ṣuḥbah teaching people. All this area became pure Muslim again. He is the Master, Shaykh of Sayyidina Ahmad Yasawī. His grave is near Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan: a place called Turkistan. He was with his murīd and he also made hundred thousands of murīds. They came to him. He taught them and sent them to other countries. And people become Muslim through them.
All Sultans were coming to Sayyidina Ahmad Yasawī. Around his grave are maybe more than a hundred Sultans. And from his Adab, we he became 63 years old, he dug under his place, under earth and said, “If I live, I cannot be up on earth. Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam lived until 63 years on earth, I cannot live up [on earth].” And he lived another 63 years under earth. He had people and was still making ‘ibādah, teaching murīds and make khidmah for ummah. With his spiritual power, all the Ottomans and others conquered other places, because his murīds taught people how Islām is giving goodness for people, justice, generosity, good behavior and everything. They were going to a place and people there were liking Islām before the Muslim army were coming.
In the same time, there were many sultanates here also. But here, the Fitnah was becoming worse. Because they are following philosophy, not looking for mashāyikh. They are not happy with them. Even Shaykh Muhyiddin Ibn ʿArabī and many of them left here. This Naqshbandī ṭarīqah is giving power to those who are following it. And the Sultans didn’t want sultanates, they just want to be murīds. But many mashāyikh said, “No. You must be there.”
Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim also left dunyā for ākhirah. They were five siblings: four boys and one girl. Mawlānā Shaykh, three brothers more and one sister. And they were studying in Istanbul, in university. In that time, they didn’t have in all Turkey but maybe one or two universities. And to go there is very difficult. Those who study secondary school, maybe become a president in that time. And they were brilliant. He and his brothers were brilliant in studying. And one of them who is older than him was a doctor in studying. He passed away. He was also a very brilliant one. Mawlānā was, in that time, looking for a Shaykh. He found a Shaykh and was going and coming to him. He is one of Awliyā’u Llāh from Istanbul also. So he gave him ijāzah (authorization).
Once, he told him to go to Madīnah or Damascus. Mawlānā, especially when he saw his brother [pass away] also - but the time has come, it is a reason for this. All this dunyā was nothing [to him]. He left everything and it was the last year of his university. In that time, university was not like in our time that you can leave, go and come. It was a really difficult place to get in or be there and pass it all. He wasn’t looking at that at all. He left everything: his studies, his family, his wealth
and everything. That time, he went without anything. For one year, he stayed in a city called Homs. It is a blessed place also. He stayed one year near Sayyidina Khalid ibn al-Walid, a famous commander of Islām. And in this place, many big scholars, ‘ulamā’ of the religion of Islām and every kind of knowledge were there. And in this year, mā shā’a Llāh - Allāh ﷻ has given him this huge cleverness. He is very clever. In one year - when he was telling me about what he learnt: in ten years we cannot learn this. In one year he became, mā shā'a Llāh, the biggest ālim.
And then he asked for permission to go to Madinah. They sent him to Damascus first. In Damascus, he met Mawlānā Shaykh. And from that time, Mawlānā Shaykh told him, “You stay here.” Mawlānā Shaykh Abdu Llāh didn’t have this much people at all. There were maybe three, four murīds. And he was everyday giving ṣuḥbah. Mawlana was writing what Mawlānā Shaykh Abdu Llāh al-Fa’iz ad-Dāghestānī was saying. He was writing, writing, writing. He said, “I wrote 7,000 ṣuḥbahs.”
After that, of course you know, he went to Cyprus. He was far from Cyprus and he came back to Cyprus. There were many miracles in this time. All his miracles were coming and coming. Everyday a miracle with Mawlānā Shaykh. Mawlānā Shaykh Abdu Llāh was sending Mawlānā for ṣuḥbah, irshād to Cyprus, Lebanon and Syria. Most of his traveling was in this area. And he was every year bringing people to ḥajj from Cyprus. It was like this until Mawlānā Shaykh Abdu Llāh passed away. After him came the order to Europe. He went since 1974 until 2001 I think; 2000 or 2001, nearly 26 years. He visited all of Europe. Even Spain, he was here.
Many people saw him. But most of the people did not see him; they were loving him without seeing him. Prophet ﷺ says, “Al-mar’u ma‘a man ahabb”, “A man will be with whom he loves.” (Hadith). A person will be with whom he loves. For this, his way is the way of love. Those who see him once, love him. Even if they are Muslim or non-Muslim, they are happy with him. Because he is Khalīfah of Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam. He is like him in actions, in everything. Trying not to leave any from Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam’s actions, meaning Sunnah.
And he wants goodness for everyone. His whole life, he was going everywhere without tiring, without complaining, just for the sake of Allāh ﷻ, to make people be happy here and hereafter. He was walking through - in Cyprus there are 300-400 villages. By foot, he was going from village to village. I remember once I was with him in north of Latakia. There is a Turkmen place, village. We went through this village also with Mawlānā. I was 10 years old. Sometimes we went by Land Rover, sometimes we went by donkey. Once we were going, there was no Land Rover and no donkey. It was summer and we walked, walked, walked, walked with Mawlānā. And there was one old man also guiding us from village to village. I was very tired. I stopped there. He said, “Oh, come. We must go.” “No, I’m very tired. Bring a donkey for me.” Maybe [stood for] 15 minutes, at the end I was very stubborn, but al-ḥamdu liLlāh we went with him. This is a very nice memory with Mawlānā. It was really nice. We were going until the end of the night. I was sleeping, and he was still making ṣuḥbah with these people. I couldn’t carry anymore because we were walking and got tired from such a long day. So I was sleeping, and they were still speaking in ṣuḥbah. And after that, he woke up for tahajjud, for Fajr and for all of this. It was a nice memory from him.
Mā shā’a Llāh, his whole life was like this. Even the last days of his life, also. He couldn't go out of Cyprus for ten years. So people were coming and wanted to see him. He was speaking to them until after midnight, one o'clock, two o'clock in the morning, something like this. And they were going up [to his room], he couldn’t go down. And from his karāmah, maybe a hundred or more than a hundred people were speaking to him. And he is not like me, mā shā’a Llāh he asks, “What is this, what is that?” He makes a long speech, and still, all people could see him. Mawlānā Shaykh - a hundred people or more than a hundred people wanted to meet him every day after Īshā. And he also had a special karāmah. There are two kinds of karāmah for awliyā’: one is tayyū makān, meaning to make a distance short. You can go from here to Makkah at once. The other one is tayyū zamān, expanding time. We realize now, it was a real karāmah. Now we do something, the day finishes. But he was going from London or to Istanbul and coming to places; mā shā’a Llāh what takes one week in one day. In one day he makes what takes one week of traveling.
Al-ḥamdu liLlāh he has many karāmahs. We mentioned some of them. What we said are very few, maybe less than 1%. May Allāh ﷻ bless his soul and make it higher and higher. And, in shā’a Llāh, for him to be happy with us, in shā’a Llāh. Thank you for you, all of you who are listening here and they will publish it for other people also. May Allāh ﷻ give those who listen, and put his love in their hearts. And may Allāh ﷻ give him from His ﷻ endless treasures, in shā’a Llāh.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
