Beware of Self-Complacency and Superiority

2 min read

As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa RaḥmatuLlāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu BiLlāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. BismiLlāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi RasūliLlāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al- Ḥaqqānī. Madad. Ṭarīqatunā aṣ-Suḥbah wa l-Khayru fi l-Jam‘iyyah.

One of the illnesses of the ego is U’jub. U’jub means self-complacency. Everyone may have from these illnesses of the ego. Common people have all kinds of things. But it is not nice for people in Tariqah or people conforming to Shari’ah to have it. Why is it not nice? Because they [lose] the virtue of worship they perform.

[…] They see themselves as superior. “I woke up for Tahajjud at night. Others are sleeping.” Shaytan gives such a thing to people in order to take away that virtue. In order for you not to attain the pleasure of Allah ﷻ completely, even if you do things fine, he is doing various things.

People of Tariqah have this rather more. Because other people admire themselves in other things. But they may admire themselves for Dunya as much as they want. “I dress beautifully. I am handsome. I am beautiful. I am so and so. My rank is so high.” Saying so is a worldly thing. They are dealing with useless things since the beginning anyway. But their self-complacency is not met well by worldly people. Even if they think something of themselves and strive for Dunya, worldly people feel jealous of them. Even if they show respect, they won’t have any love or virtue. They will have no Thawab. This is so.

It is not a nice thing for people on the way of Allah ﷻ. We must be careful about it. If you are performing worship, you must make Shukr for it. If others are not doing it, don’t show superiority over them. Allah ﷻ has given you this favor and did not give it to others. Therefore, you must think it is not from you but from Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. You must know so. All good deeds are the grant from Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla to us. They are the great favors given to us. We must make Shukr for that. May Allah ﷻ protect us from the evil of our egos.

Seeing ourselves as superior for the worship and deeds we do, and belittling others takes away all virtue, as we said. May Allah ﷻ protect us. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is Powerful over everything. He ﷻ might take it from you and give it to that someone you don’t like.

And you will remain just like that. May Allah ﷻ protect us. May Allah ﷻ protect us from the traps of our egos for the honor of these holy days insha’Allah.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
