Three Kinds of People
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa Raḥmatullāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu Billāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi Rasūlillāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad. Ṭarīqatunā aṣ-Suḥbah wa l-Khayru fi l-Jam‘iyyah.
Often in khuṭbah of Jum‘ah, the khuṭbah starts with:
"‘Ibāda Llāh ittaqu Llāh ūsīkum wa iyyaya bi taqwá Llāh". "O people, O community of believers, be afraid of Allāh ﷻ, respect and love Allāh ﷻ. I advise this to you and to my own ego. We are advising this". Khuṭbah starts like this. So not only the listeners, but also the one who speaks gets benefit from the ṣuḥbah, khuṭbah and the advice.
There are three kinds of people, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. One kind is a person who knows, learns and speaks. He does what he tells, and he tells people what he knows. Another part is someone who tells what he knows but who doesn't do it. And there is the part which only listens, and that is jamā‘ah. The worst is the one who tells but doesn't do it, says our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
Therefore, where there is ṣuḥbah or advice, the one who gives it must apply it too. It is not only by speaking. And then giving advice, telling things that Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla and our Holy Prophet ﷺ want leads Muslims to apply them. They will do as much as they can. Because people cannot do all of it, attending that gathering brings great Thawāb and barakah to them.
As long as good things are told, as long as knowledge is shared, it is wrong to think like "Should we say this? Will this man be upset, angry or disappointed?" You must tell what you know as true. Who accept will accept it. Who won't, they know for themselves. But if you are scared of telling something to people, you won't be able to say anything. Because you can't make everyone happy. Who are
happy, fine. Who are not, it's up to them. But your duty is to speak the truth, to give advice to people. It is the order of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla and our
Holy Prophet ﷺ. Giving advice as He ﷺ says, "ad-dīnu n-naṣīḥah", “Religion is advice”. Making ṣuḥbah to people and showing the way is the duty of ‘alīms, hojjas and mashāyikh. What's the benefit if they don't do so? It will be useless.
We must say what is true. And people who don't like it must think about it. Some people nowadays object to it directly and don't like it by saying "It is not true. I don't think so". Well, your opinion is not reliable. You must look into what you don't like. Is it coming from your ego? If not, is there a mistake in the advice? You must look into it. If it comes from your ego, you must improve your ego. Otherwise, you won't get any benefit from it. And instead of attaining thawāb, it will be something like a sin for you. Because who doesn't accept the advice will regret it. Advice is for Allāh ﷻ, for the Prophet ﷺ and for the believers.
Therefore, all of this ṣuḥbah and advice is considered a gathering of knowledge. This is the gathering loved by Allāh ﷻ. Certainly, not the people here but some people hear it from someone and object to it. Whereas there is nothing to object to. It is a ṣuḥbah for the good of people. We are speaking so that people benefit from it. May Allāh ﷻ make us from those who listen and benefit from it. Probably Sayyidinā ‘Umar said, "Isma‘ū wa‘ū, waidha wa-‘aytum fāntafi‘ū" - “Listen and understand. And when you understand, benefit from it". May all the ṣuḥbat be useful to all of us insha’Allah.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
