The Real Sufis
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa Raḥmatullāhi wa Barakātuh. A‘ūdhu Billāhi Minash-shayṭāni r-rajīm. Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. Wa ṣ-Salātu wa s-Salāmu ‘alá Rasūlinā Muḥammadin Sayyidi l-Awwalīna wa l-Akhirīn. Madad yā RasūlAllāh, Madad yā Sādāti Aṣḥābi Rasūlillāh, Madad yā Mashāyikhinā, Dastūr Mawlana Sheikh Abdullāh al-Fā’iz ad-Dāghistāni, Sheikh Muḥammad Nāẓim al-Ḥaqqānī. Madad. Ṭarīqatunā aṣ-Suḥbah wa l-Khayru fi l-Jam‘iyyah.
Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi is from the biggest Awliya who gave knowledge from maybe 800 years now. His knowledge is giving benefit for human beings until Qiyamah. From where did he get this knowledge? From the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. He said “I am a servant for the most beloved one for Allah ﷻ.” And with this even, the whole world loves him and accepts him. In this world are those who are not Muslim and not believers, most of them are interested in him and their bestselling book is his book. He took from the heavenly knowledge of the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam and support from the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.
Who takes this support and love from the Prophet ﷺ, people love them. Many of the old and new, like Sayyidina Ibn ul-Arabi, like Shirazi, and many of the Awliya of Islam, the western people or Non-Muslim people respect them and even love them. Especially Mawlana Sheikh Nazim alhamduliLlah; the latest one. Why is this? It is because their intention is to spread this love and to help human beings. This is what makes people love them.
All of these people, as we said about them, do this for the sake of Allah ﷻ; they don’t ask anything from people. Their main aim is to help people, to save people. Exactly like the prophets before. Now there are no prophets anymore. But before the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, Allah ﷻ sent prophets all the time and they had said, “We don’t ask for any wages from you, we don’t ask for any money. We just want you to save yourselves from this bad situation.” People don’t like somebody to ask something from them. And Awliyau’Llah and scholars don’t give any value for Dunya, for money or for other things; they never ask for that.
This is what the Prophet ﷺ says, “Have no desire for this world, Allah will love you; and have no desire for what people possess, and the people will love you.” Make “Zuhd” which means leave/renounce what people have and don’t ask [for it], they will love you; and leave what people ask for [Dunya], Allah ﷻ will give you. This is what makes people love them and respect them. This and especially the support of the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam makes people’s hearts love them.
Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi is the master of Sufis and also from Awliyau’Llah. Sometimes some people say that they are Sufi but they’re only Sufi in shape and not real ones. He [Rumi] has many criticisms in the Mathnawi about those who are calling themselves Sufi. He says many funny stories and many things about them. One of his sayings, “From a thousand Sufis, you’ll only find one Sufi.” To be a Sufi - maybe we can imitate; to imitate is also good, but some of them are really fake ones, cheating people. This was in that time and in this time also. What Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi says is for every time. This Mathnawi is an amazing book. They say “Freud”. Freud is very small compared to Mawlana, what he described about human beings, everything, every detail. Masha’Allah it applies to that time and this time; it’s the same.
The Sufi must be very merciful to people and not merciful to himself. For everything that happens, he must say, “This is good for me, it is from Allah ﷻ.” He mustn’t even say, “I am patient.” No, he must say, “This is normal.”
One of these Sufi people who was a very good and precious one, was going around in the streets. One bad person who’s not happy with him swore at him, said bad things about him and shouted at him. He was just passing from there. It was a really bad thing done by that bad one; he was shouting and swearing at him. This Sufi who was an ‘Alim, caught his beard and said [to his ego], “Look, every time I told you that I’m a very bad man, you did not believe. Look now, these people knew me. You see, these people knew, and you didn’t believe that you’re a bad one. Every time I told you, “O my Nafs, my ego you are bad, you are very bad.” You didn’t believe and you thought of yourself that you are something. Look, these people are saying the right thing. You deserve more than this.”
Is there any Sufi in these days that can do this? Masha’Allah our Sufis now swear at each other on the internet like this quickly [Mawlana laughs and motions a quick typing action with his fingers]. Masha’Allah people in one minute write one page, I need half an hour to write two letters [Mawlana laughs]. This is shaytan
playing with us. Don’t listen to the one who says something [think], “Okay you can say anything, don’t worry, free country.” Leave them to say what they like to say. And you, only look at yourself. If you say, “Maybe this man is right. My Nafs, my ego is worse than what he said. May Allah ﷻ forgive us”, this is good for you.
Insha’Allah may Allah ﷻ make us to know more and more about Tariqah, about Tasawwuf, and about these good people: how they were behaving and what they were doing in this situation and in every situation in their lives. The first one you must take example from is our Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. When he ﷺ wasn’t happy with something, he ﷺ wasn’t shouting or saying anything. He ﷺ kept silent so the Sahabah knew that the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam wasn’t happy with this. And he ﷺ wasn’t even discussing it with somebody. He ﷺ didn’t like to be with people who are shouting at each other. He ﷺ was never shouting at any of the Sahabah. If he ﷺ is not happy, he ﷺ just keeps silent or leaves this place.
Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm, ‘ ’, ‘Laqad
Kāna Lakum Fī Rasūli Llāhi ‘Uswatun Hasana’, ‘There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example.’ (Qur’ān 33:21). Allah ﷻ is saying about the Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, “He is the best example for you.” May Allah ﷻ make us to try to do this thing - we cannot [completely] because now in the days we are in, maybe you try but you forget many times, because all of what they’re putting on us is to make all the people discuss, shout and go against everything. May Allah ﷻ help us and protect us from our bad character and from our ego insha’Allah. May Allah ﷻ give us good behavior and good character insha’Allah.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
